Who thought Laura Linney was flawless in her role? I thought she quite incredible! She said her lines perfectly and she was fantastic. When I saw she only got "nominated" I wanted to see who won the Oscar for Best Actress that year, and I was surprised it was Julia Roberts who won it for Erin Brockovich. I think Robert's performance was all right - she shouted a lot, swore a lot, and wore a push-up bra, but she wasn't nearly as perfect as Laura Linney in You Can Count On Me. But Laura Linney has always been an underrated actress.
I was impressed with Laura's role and performance. I also liked the way that Mark whilst playing the role of a confused and wandering brother seemed so lost in himself. Its so good when you can actually see actors playing a role that seems so natural
Not only should Linney have won, this film should have won Best Picture in 2000. Seeing "Gladiator" and "Erin Brockovich" taking home the big awards - perhaps the greatest injustice in Academy Awards history (besides the Miramax fiasco of '98.)
this film was definitely amazing! Laura Linney was robbed of her oscar, and what about a nomination for mark Ruffalo?? He should have definitely at least been nominated, he did such a terrific job.
I don't know if was the best female performance of 2000, but it was better than Roberts'. Roberts is enjoyable and engaging but plays very close to the same character in every movie she's in -- only the dialogue, scenery and co-stars change (alas, the curse of being "only" a movie star). Linney appears to be the real deal, a la Streep.

I agree, she played the role so well and so confident! I have to admit though, she wasn't on my A-List actresses! I saw her in "The Trueman Show", she was awful in it and then I saw her in "A Simple Twist of Fate" she was even worse!
"You Can Count On Me" was impressive and a real break-through for her but I have to say she wasn't very impressive in "Kinsey".
Ellen Burstyn gave the best performacne that year for Requiem for a Dream. Linney was also better than Roberts....that win was a crock....every year they have one hollywood starlett win it seems over the usually cast of really comitted actresses...it seems Julianne Moore, Linney and Kate Winslet are always nominate but always losing to Halle Berry's, Roberts, Paltrows, Charlize Therons, etc
meh, charlize is just so good looking, that you can't stop looking at her, and she melts the brains of the male viewers. they don't know what a good actress is anyway, often.
they will give her the good votes just because they want her.

well i do think halle berry and charlize performances were good, but it always seems that when a mainstream start like them and Kidman, Roberts,Paltrow etc takes a risk and does an out of charactor role they always get the awards since they are Hollywood royalty. some may be deserving...but i hate when it overshadows better actors in some years....Connely was due though...she has put in great performances in indies like Requiem, Dark City, Waking the Dead, Pollok etc before she started with mainstream films....and it seems like she still wants good roles in films (not hollywood fluff thrillers or romantic comedies) and doing indies as well
Laura Linney should definitely, absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt won the Best Actress Oscar for this film. I nearly threw something at the TV in disgust when they called out Julia Roberts' name. Mark Ruffalo certainly deserved a Best Actor nomination too, and the film should have been nominated for Best Picture and Director as well as the Screenplay nod it received. The whole film is a beautiful, small-scale masterpiece from start to finish.
I really loved Linney's performance but I believe that the Oscar should have gone to Ellen Burstyn in 2000. Her performance in Requiem for A Dream was phenomenal and the best I've seen in a long time.
wait a minute it's not fair to hate on Charlize just because she's so beautiful. That was one hell of a performance in Monster did you see it? That wasn't all makeup. That was a brilliant performance one of the best ever given by an actress. She more than deserved her Oscar. I bet if Laura Linney had given that same performance you wouldn't be saying all that. People just don't want to take beautiful people see seriously I guess. It's unfair because that performance was quite a brilliant one and shes playing a real person. Was she supposed to play aileen wuornos looking like a supermodel? Oh and Ellen Burstyn deserved to win that year that Roberts won. In fact I would say Ellen Burstyn in Requiem fora Dream and Charlize Theron in monster were the two greatest performances of this decade so far.
Thank you! I too thought that Julia Roberts won because of the push-up bra :) I love Laura Linney and believe that she is one of the most unappreciated actresses in film today. But, it's not surprising that the most talented get overlooked during awards time and Hollywood prefers to give awards to "one of their own" (i.e. superstars). I hope that they will wake up soon and start giving Oscars to those that truly deserve it like Laura and Kate Winslet.
I couldn't help overhearing. I had my ear to the door. -Matt Beemish
I don't think Julia Roberts won because of a push-up bra. She was the highest paid actress in the world. A lot of people felt she was overdue and her preformance in Erin Brockovich was engaging and entertaining. Yet, yes, Laura Linney and Ellen Bursten's performance in "Requiem For A Dream" was more deserving.
Yes, I agree that Laura should have won an Oscar. It that movie came out today, it would sweep the Oscars. Back in 2000 Indie films were not as showcased as they are today.
As much as I loved Laura's performance,i still think Ellen Burstyn was the best with REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.Laura was my second choice, though.Juila Roberts? No way!
ps: Charlize Theron is a great actress and totally deserved to win for MONSTER.
Maggie Cheung for In the Mood For Love should have won that year. She was not even nominated. Joan Allen, Ellen Burstyn, Michelle Yeoh, and Juliette Binoche should have been the other nominees
2011 Awards: The Social Network/ Jim Carrey/ Natalie Portman/ Andrew Garfield/ Barbara Hershey
Although this is the original of the trilogy--I've gotten sick of her roles as a depressed-ish woman who sleeps around with guys and has a brother with issues (the other two being Love Actually, The Savages). Am I the only one who has noticed the semi-type casting? Complaining aside, I still love her dearly and know that her oscar is coming to her one day. BUT - ironically enough, Mark Ruffalo has also fallen victim to "that cute guy in the chick flicks" (13 Going on 30, Rumor Has It, Just Like Heaven)....but he was spectacular here I thought- certainly oscar worthy.

-i guess the chick flicks pay the bills, but i can totally overlook them when i see him in stuff like zodiac and shutter island and brothers bloom and sunshine.
I really like Laura Linney in all of her films however when it comes time for recognition it seems she is "always the bridesmaid and never the bride".Case in point...this year's oscar nominations.Sure she was nominated(again) but you just knew she didn't have a chance at securing the win.
