Oh yes. It's so generic. I think the renaming was done primarily because the movies and the show were licensed by different companies. That's probably also why "Battousai" is erroneously translated throughout as "the assassin" when it was actually his nickname.

It's the most reasonable explanation I can think of. Perhaps they simply did not want to advertise the series, due to it belonging to their competitors. Although I heard Funimation now owns the rights. Perhaps we will see a re-release in the future?

although it feels weird to me when people refers to rurouni kenshin as Samurai X, you need to understand that the common television viewer outside of japan does not know japanese and a show with a japanese name repel them and decrease viewers.
actually, because it was renamed to a name that americans can be attracted to, the show got more popular with the general public and did not stay only in the anime community unlike most animes.
so maybe you should in someway thank the guy who made the decision to rename it...
I think the name is okay. It would be pointless to market it as Rurouni Kenshin since nobody would know the guy. He is a samurai dude with a X on his cheek so it fits :)
