what ever happened to katsura?

i never found out what happened to katsura? did he die or what?

reply

Hi,

well most of the characters (but not Kenshin himself!) really existed. He didn't die (it is not suggested in the movie either as far as I know), and he later took part in the Iwakura mission(1972), a mission to America and Europa to study other governmental structures. He died of disease in 1877, aged 43.

He remained quite prominent, together with Okubu Tuchimichi (if you have also watched the episodes you should know him) and Saigo Takomiri, he was one of the three noble men of the restoration. Ironically, Okubo was killed by a sympathizer of Saigo.

Kenshin is based of a historical figure named Kawakami Gensai thats who kenshin is based off of.

reply

i wonder whether Gensai himself had a cross-shaped scar too, just like kenshin.
i think that'd be cool.

reply

No, I don't believe Gensai did.
The similarities they do share if I recall correctly are:
Their small height
Their feminine voices
Their swordplay

That's not to say that Gensai knew Hitenmitsurugi, as that is definitely a fake swordstyle. But I think Gensai was a pivotal assassin or killed a lot of people...something along those lines. Unfortunately, I read that Gensai was captured at one point and was ultimately beheaded :(

I think I read a note by Watsuki that says he decided to give Kenshin a cross on his face because he looked too feminine without it. Kenshin needed something to make him look cooler, and so the cross is born.

The real Katsura Kogoro died of a brain disease in 1878, after having become one of the pioneering individuals of the Meiji government.

reply

I don't know what happened to the real Kogoro Katsura but in the film i think is he who kills the traitor at the end.

reply

Nope. That's Shishio Makoto.

reply

Yep, like the other person said : it's Shishio Makoto, in the manga this is even more clear (of course, at that time , Shishio hadn't been burned yet so he didn't wear those bandages).
It can't be Katsura, because if you look closely, you can see that he is watching the killing, not doing it himself.

And apart from that, I don't know what kind of a swordsman Katsura was in real life, but this anime never shows him as a fighter. He was a politician and a leader, but I don't think he was a great swordsman.

Plz visit my profile to take a look at unsolved threads.Plz use relevant title,SOLVED if so.

Katsura Kogoro was a superb fighter, but was constrained from fighting by the vow he gave to Takasugi in exchange for taking Kenshin from the Kiheitai.

Katsura agreed not to fight with a sword in the film, we never really see any scenes of him fighting so we can only base his ability on the real man. Many of the people and events in Kenshin are real or based real people/events which is part of why people love this series.
