who does kenishin love more?

In samuria X Kenishin asked Tomoe to marry him which is really cool but when she died........and now he's with Koaru but IO mean who does he love more? HIs belated love Tomoe or Koaru?

reply

Can't really answer that. I doubt he loved either more. Its like someones wife dying and then he remarries. He probably wouldn't love one more than the other(assuming he did love both)

reply

Something makes me think that he loved Koaru more...just my opinion though

reply

Clearly Kenshin loves them both.Tomoe saved Kenshin's humanity..they fell in love..you know..the usual...But Kaoru took that humanity and made it more beautiful...Nobody can really continue loving a dead person...am I right? But since Kaoru's got Kenji...and Kenshin is moving on...I think Kenshin loves Kaoru more...

reply

I suppose Kenshin loved them equally, but in different ways? There's no one defined way to love a person, is there? To me, Kenshin loved Tomoe for saving his humanity just as he was on the brink of "going over the edge" as an assassinator, as you say. Kaoru, in many ways, represents the dawn of the new age that he has sacrificed so much for. The murder of thousands will always be on the back of his mind (Tomoe's in particular), but perhaps Kaoru to him symbolizes hope and affirmation that all that he did was worth it.

To me, Kenshin loved them both deeply because each was an integral part of different stages of his life. He might thank Tomoe for dragging him out of that massacre hell, but also be relieved that someone like Kaoru was there to complete the healing.

In a nutshell, it's all neatly representeed in his cross scar: Tomoe partly created it; Kaoru helped him to come to terms with it, and eventually be free of it. Who's to say that the one who "had the last say" was more important?

My honest answer? Kaoru
It is true that I dont like Tomoe very much. But putting that aside and with a cold head, I just truly believe that Kaoru was THE one:
Tomoe gave Kenshin just what he needed a that time, peace of mind and the true reason as to why he should fight. Happiness. Tomoe was kenshin´s first love and I think he will always remember her as the woman who saved him, but really, who can say for sure that if kenshin hadn´t met Tomoe and would have left for the mountains with someone else, he would love that someone else just as well? He WAS just 15 years old after all, and had never known what normal life was like. Whereas with Kaoru, he stayed for good, after 10 years of wandering, years in which hundreds of women (I bet) must have offered him a place to live. Besides I think Kaoru is his match. Tomoe´s personality was way too quiet, too bland. And is not like Kenshin was the one for Tomoe either. I think Tomoe and Akira belonged together. In the end, Kenshin and Tomoe were just two very lonely people who found comfort in one another.

reply

Hmmm interesting. The way I see it, he and Tomoe might have remained a couple and lived out their days together had circumstances allowed it. True, he was just 15 years old then and probably wanted to see what else life had in store besides a lifetime in a village. But throughout the series, we see that he is an extremely loyal person, albeit very stubborn about his morals as well. So if his decision to run away from Hiko to join the war seemed rash, I think it was an act that wouldn't be repeated in his love life. Kenshin never struck me as a particularly ambitious person-- he didn't join the revolution for glory, after all-- and with such a violent past, what does he need more excitement for? :P I don't think he'll get that much kick from abandoning wife and living the life of a vagrant. Besides, Kenshin is one always on the lookout for others; he's forever putting others before himself and if it meant hurting Tomoe's feelings if he ran away, I think he'll opt for a quiet, peaceful life with her instead, even if he really wanted out. *shrugs*

reply

Okay you got a point there. As the loyal person Kenshin is, if Tomoe hadn´t died, I dont think either he would have left her. Even if he wanted. But then we wouldn´t have our Rurouni ne? ^_^X

reply

Im under the impretion he loves kaoru more, perhaps i get that impression after he lost tomoe he doesnt intend to loose kaoru like he lost tomoe, learned him his mistake to never make that mistake again, showing more affection and love

reply

You don't like Tomoe much? Wow. I was smitten with her. I am smitten everytime I watch this. Her beautiful voice, her soulful eyes, her courage to love.
As for Kaoru, I haven't watched Reflection yet. Maybe because I can't visualise Kenshin with another. So, I'm deeply biased in many ways...
Do I need this? Everyone here seems to have watched this.

In the part at the end of the first OVA, after Tomoe's death, there's the montage of Kenshin fighting in his last battles before giving up the sword. While resting against a tree, Tomoe emerges from it and holds him, comforting him and giving him hope and strength. And with it, the glorious music swells. That's indescribably beautiful and heart-breaking. I can't imagine him loving another that much, that he can bring the feeling of their presence back. The scene to me felt that she would always remain in his thoughts.
This film is poetry in motion and something one can easily identify with. My girlfriend always sobs uncontrollably whenever the extra-emotional scenes come on. It's exquisitively moving. And unsurpassed in its romance.

This topic is very interesting and since the live action movies came out, it was more interesting because the fandom is awaken.

I, personally, not very fond of Tomoe. Basically, the mangaka didn't plan to include another character into the story. Nobuhiro-sensei decided to add more story about Kenshin's background in the middle of drawing Kyoto Arc. The scars on his cheek, it's the way Nobuhiro made to look Kenshin look cool.

Tomoe is the only Kenshin's personality that I don't like. She is not smart for sealing her own fate and her death is reckless. It's more she doesn't want to deal with her own consequences and want Kenshin to remember her as the beautiful and quiet person that the young boy knew, and not Tomoe who got close to him as a spy. And she is also not kinder than anyone (per Kenshin's quotes). If she did kinder, she wouldn't leave her brother alone and turned Enishi into lunatic homicidal maniac.
Even if they did continue living together after Bakumatsu, they would never be happy. Too many wrongs, guilt and betrayal.

In the first live action movie, when Megumi asks Kenshin about his scar, he only says "the woman that young man who supposes to marry" not "the most important person to me" like in the manga. That's why I love the live action movies, more real.

And most importantly, marrying Kaoru with those feelings for Tomoe are still remains is terribly WRONG. If you read the manga, after Jinchuu Arc, Kenshin took Kaoru to visit Tomoe's grave. There, he said goodbye to Tomoe, meaning he wants to live the present with Kaoru. He won't forget her as the person who brought him back to sanity, but he also wants to live in the present. With the love and happiness Kaoru gave for him.

Reflection is a bad fanfiction written and Nobuhiro himsef stated strongly it's not even canon. To most of the fans, that OVA is not even existed.

reply

I think he loved Tomoe more. It's because of Tomoe that the scars still remain. It's cause of her that Kenshin has chosen this new life as a pacifist. IF Kenshin loved Kaoru as much why was he always leaving her to do *beep* And when he finally dies, the scars finally dissappear.

reply

I think in many respects, the scar emphasises that he was content in his death, dying in Kaoru's arms as she welcomed him home using his birthname. So, I think that he loved Kaoru more, but the guilt of Tomoe's death kept him from ever striving to achieve happiness with her.

As for who loves Kenshin more, its obvious it was Kaoru. Hands down.

reply

That's only in SighSuckHen, which doesn't count because it went against Nobuhiro Watsuki's vision for Kenshin.

Its hard to say... Kenshin was very confused in the ovas, he don't want to feel anything for Tomoe, but at the end he really loves her... but then Tomoe is killed (by he), and Kenshin and Kaoru have a son... SOOOOOOOO...

Kaoru.

pd: Tomoe cheat battousai, so she was a bitch.

reply

kenshin loved tomoe about 8
kenshin loved kaoru about 9

so obviously he loves kaoru more. does that answer your question?

reply

Well no kidding Kenshin had a son with Kaoru! He would have had kids with Tomoe if she never died! I think he loves Tomoe more because even though he didn't mean to fall in love with her, he did. And besides, in the series, don't you notice that when ever Kaoru makes a move he gets this shocked or weird look on his face, like he doesn't want her? I'm all for Tomoe on this one.

reply

Answer? Kaoru

Kenshin's promise was to never kill again for what he did to Tomoe, but when Kaoru was in danger he was willing to kill.

reply

"Kenshin's promise was to never kill again for what he did to Tomoe, but when Kaoru was in danger he was willing to kill."

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RIGHT. =D *CLAPS*

Tomoe's a bland b****. I mean, kenshin's deep and mysterious already. so..... where's the contrast? the chemistry? It's like kenshin being with his female version. I think the creators of the series are smart enough to notice this, that's why they cut tomoe off the run. jeez. sometimes we forget that someone is running this show. Ask me, ask the producers, kenshin's better off with Kaoru. And He loves Kaoru more. All the events that happened in his life so far, i think, was ultimately designed to help bring the character of Kaoru into the story. It's pretty technical, but heck, HE LOVES KAORU MORE. PERIOD.

reply

I must agree with you there. If Tomoe had lived on, I think everyone would be regretting that she didn't die. Her character is as bland as a raw egg. She merely puts her head down, does what she's told to do and if she didn't have the female touch, you would realise that if she looked in the mirror she would've seen Kenshin. I reckon Kenshin loved Kaoru much more. I don't think he even loved Tomoe, he only cared about her.

reply

I somehow doubt that Tomoe had always been like that, id say she was very scarred after Kiyosato's death which led to her being "bland as a raw egg".

I think he loved them both the same.

reply

No offense to those who like the OVA, but Tomoe's characterization is off. She's cool in the manga, but just comes across as an icy bitch in this movie. She doesn't take crap from anyone in the original story, including Kenshin.

Kenshin: Ummm...

Tomoe: My name? Tomoe.

Kenshin: So Tomoe-san, what are you doing?

Tomoe: Can't you see?

Kenshin: Helping out in the kitchen?

Tomoe: See? You already knew.

Tomoe's personality seemed to be drained out of her in the movie, leading to a lot of people disliking her because of how she's portrayed. I wish the Jinchuu Arc had been animated so people could see her as Watsuki made her since the anime tended to follow the original story more closely (sorry to all of you who think the OVAs are better, because the anime actually follows Watsuki's story a lot closer, though still falls way short).

Well, gathering points from both sides, I first have to say one thing: Kenshin still didn't kill to save Kaoru. Example--Enishi. Kaoru always seemed to selfish to accept Tomoe, and she, herself, said that she was jealous of Tomoe. Tomoe essentially created the Kenshin we've all grown to love. Before Kenshin even met Kaoru he was brave, kind, and refused to kill. Kaoru only followed Tomoe's example to keep up with her by risking her life (with Enishi). Yukishiro Tomoe was brave enough to sacrifice her life to allow Kenshin to continue. In a short enough time, they fell in love and Tomoe could get past her past (play on words--meaning Kiyosama) and love Kenshin. Yet, it took forever for Kaoru to love Kenshin. Himura wasn't too sure of his love for Kaoru. It took no time at all for him to fall in love with Tomoe and too long for him to fall in love again. Like the scar, TOmoe is a part of Kenshin. Though she may seem cold, it's that distance and space that she creates that helps Kenshin's other personality to come out. Plus, she's not a cold bitch. It's just the OAV's representation. If you hadnt noticed, the OAV is ALWAYS more serious than the anime--even Kaoru and Kenshin.

hi, where can i find this movie? Thanks.

He loved them both deeply, that's all, as someone said, you don't love your new wife more than your deceased ex, you love them in different ways because the love NEVER ended with the other one, it was interrupted and very much alive. Kenshin to the current day of the manga/series, still very much loves her and has guilt over killing her, Kaoru gives him a NEW different love (and notice that even she respects and accepts Tomoe being Kenshin's first love).
It's that way.
Also, Tomoe had A LOT of personality and soul, she's cold, but she was raging inside and when she falls for Ken, you very much notice that. Plus he took a hit for him, call THAT not having personality.

reply

kenshin has two personality as battosai and as rurouni
in my opinion
battosai loves tomoe most and tomoe loves kenshin as battosai
rurouni loves kaoru most and kaoru loves kenshin as rurouni
they have different lives that they lived together and that cant be valued according to each other they are both great loves...
as kenshin including both personality i think we cannot say he loves tomoe or kaoru most...

reply

He loved them both equally, also the OVA "Reflection" is probably the weakest and dumbest of the Kenshin stories, even the creator of Kenshin denounced it saying that is NOT his ending for Kenshin and that he had no input on the story which is a cardinal sin as it is his work. The amount of OOC in that thing is crazy, Kenshin is always a sad sack, Kaoru is just crying and doing nothing, and Yahiko is not himself as if he forgot himself which is suppose to be a "proud Tokyo Samurai".

Reflection's only good things are the animation, and the music but other then that it is some BS.
