Were you aware all the time that...

...she was gonna die in the end?
Or did you forget it halfway through the movie like I did and just thought they were really gonna end up together?

so true! When I know someone is gonna die in a movie, I usually try to shut down emotionally and then watch the rest of the film in a guarded manner. Christian states right up front, "The woman I loved is dead." Yet, I got completely caught up in his emotion and their final song together still gives me chills.

reply

exactly! I totally forgot once the film got going because it just capture's you and gets you hoping. I think that's a mark of a great film.

reply

The movie starts off with Christian introducing the story saying, "The woman I loved is... dead". Pretty good indication right there.

reply

But the OP is asking if you remembered that the whole time you were watching the film. Personally, I completely forgot about it and was hoping it was going to end well for them - big shock when it happened, and then I remembered we'd been told at the start.

I didn't forget, but I was thinking that somehow the beginning was a ruse and he was writing something to cover up her death... and then they would ride away into the sunset with the Duke thinking she was dead or something. I think they were very brave by keeping her death in.

(PS: Did anyone notice that during "Your Song" two stars crashed into each other and exploded? I'm pretty sure that was meant to indicated that they were "star-crossed," as in "star-crossed lovers." For those that don't know, the term originated with Romeo and Juliet and is meant to indicate lovers that are doomed.)

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.

Also note that in "Romeo and Juliet" Shakespeare announces the tragic ending in the opening prologue lines (although not all modern audience members completely understand that language).

There is that exact connection, that only romantic love is a love that can never be fulfilled. I also think there are strong connotations to repressed love like homosexual love - Kylie, a gay icon, appears briefly in the film and the idea that two people fall in love but are forbidden to go through with it is still, unfortunately, how many homosexual people experience love to this day. Every time that Moulin Rouge! ends, I feel so sad at the end because yes, even being told at the very beginning and the hilarious scene where the cast explain the plot of 'Spectacular Spectacular' (basically explaining the plot of the movie itself) where the Duke pipes up with "And at the end should someone die?" still doesn't make her death any less shocking...I suppose it's saddening because of the way Christian will never give up on 'a love that will last forever' even though in a way it's already ended, and the sobering thought I have that this will inevitably happen to me, all of us, because experiencing death (and so grief) is as strong a point of life as being born.

OP: She collapses from coughing fits pretty much every 10 minutes. That kind of reminded me all through the film. Did you happen to miss those parts? :p

Pretty much.

The second line from the OP says "or did you forget?". Pretty clear question right there.

When you're 17 a cow can seem dangerous and forbidden...am I alone here?

The first time i saw Moulin Rouge I must of went to the kitchen or something so i missed the Satine is dead line. When she did die at the end i was pissed! How could they end it like that?!? Upon a second viewing I was in on it.

I agree that it was done extremely well. I always cry during the end of this movie and I thought her death scene was so beautifully shot, with the rose petals and the black B.G. Plus Ewan's acting in that scene is amazing.

I never really noticed that about the star. Eleven years later, finding out something new. I love this movie.

reply

yeah i was aware - because it said it like a million times o.O at the beginning, and then satine is coughing up blood the whole movie, and christian is talking about "those last, fatal days", and even during the song "spectacular spectacular" when they are singing the whole upcoming plot of the movie, the duke says that at the end someone should die. i liked how you knew the whole movie it would happen, it made the whole thing seem so doomed.

reply

I think there is definitely a strong connection with Romeo and Juliet. Heck on of the other movies in Baz Luhrmann's 'Red Curtain Trilogy' is Romeo and Juliet
And like Romeo and Juliet you know they are going to die in the end but you get so caught up in the story you either forget... like I did... or hope against hope it will all turn out ok somehow.
Ultimately its not about the destination... its the journey...

It's so dreamy... oh fantasy free me! So you can't see me... no not at all...

reply

How could you possibly forget that she was going to die? They keep showing you that Christian is writing the story, which has to remind you that he said that Satine dies. Satine is constantly falling ill, which has to remind you that she dies of consumption at the end. Were you just not paying attention?

Most superhero movies suck, but the good ones put other blockbusters to shame.

reply

Yeah. Thanks to my sis. :p

reply

I definitely forgot, and I think it was an intention of the director.

Of course, once Zidler quietly told Satine 'you're dying', it's hard to get away from the inevitability of it. Still, I'm pretty sure many of us - including me - hoped something would alter their course at the very end.

reply

Yes, because I knew it was a remake of Camille.
