Ending in the Liquor store

Okay...I'm sorry I've seen the ending twice now. In the liquor store at the end Phil says he took the night off. I don't get it - from what - he still milked the guy out of 200$ bucks. ?????????????

reply

No he didn’t. He paid for the towing and storage of the car.

reply

He got paid back after that. If you don't remember. :)

reply

I'm pretty sure it was his way of avoiding the question.

reply

He helped Luke Wilson out at the end instead of being his con self.

I think he must do that little plan of his more than once a night, once he gets the money he probably tries it a few more times.
but this time he did it only once and hung out with them for the rest of the evening. which is sth he normally doesn't do.
he might have got money, but this time it was more for amusement.

reply

Exactly. I bet he does that multiple times a night. Makes anywhere from $100-$800 on a successful night.

Woah, talk about missing the point! Phil was not a con man at all, he helps people for his 'job'. He didn't just help Stan out 'in the end', he was helping him the whole evening. And he sets it up at the end to also help the two guys in the tow truck.

It' no wonder that some people didn't like this movie if they missed the underlying concept of the mystery man. None of it was an accident.

The only improvement to the script I could see would have been if, when asked about his job, he had replied "I bake bread".
