Morell VS Richard (Dead Man's Shoes)

I thought Paddy's character in Romeo Brass was fantastic, and in some ways I feel it compares to his character in Dead Man's Shoes. Foe example, both characters firstly appear to be normal friendly guys (Morell with Gavin and Romeo, Richard with Antony), and then appear to change to the audience. Although Morell hasn't got a dark motive and Richard has, they both do not give up in what they want. Both appear to be intimidating and sinister, especially when Romeo pays a visit to Morell and he gives him the Army drill. Richard has just came out of the Army, and it is likely that Morell may have been in the army ("Experienced with war wounds", the Army drill).

Please let me know what you think ;)

Similar in that they're both unhinged and played by the same guy. There the similarities end.
There is no suggestion that Morrell has ever been in the army, rather that he's an isolative and socially disfunctional loser unhealthily obsessed with military machismo, and who probably spends his dole on cans of soup and Guns 'n' Ammo magazines. Hence the only person to whom he can confidently display his 'training' and 'superior physical prowess' is a twelve year old kid. Richard on the other hand is everything that Morell would have wet dreams about being.

Bottom line though, two solid sterling films from the spiritual successor to Lindsay Anderson.

i actually think morell did not appear as friendly, but as a guy w/obvious mental problems all the way through, even in his very first scene. his actions were always odd and bizarre and disconcerting, and he probably spent time with young kids because that was close to his mental age, actually. i always felt he was deranged and most likely able to lose the plot eventually. at best, he was always going to put people off by his weird behaviour...and given his actions, i am not so certain he didnt have a dark motive, at least brewing in the back of his mind, all the time.

richard had obviously gone insane, but was more likely driven mad by anger and shame, and before joining the army he was most likely a normal person.

they were both clearly dealing with issues, but i believe morell had a mental illness, while richard was driven mad.

i actually think that, if anyone was similar, morell had some similarities w/combo from 'this is england'. in the way they both appeared just a bit dangerous and deranged in the beginning, and kept walking that razors edge, and occasionally going off, until the end where they go too far...

anyone see that comparison?

If you look carefully Meadows seems to like using characters like that in most of his film. Combo/Morrell/Sonny etc. These are all characters that appear to be nice in some ways at first, but are just weak men inside preying on the vunerable.
