Ummmmmmm.....

Why on earth didn't they call the police on him!?!?!?!

Perhaps the OP meant the kids, but what about the wife? Her hubby is about to get killed on the front lawn and there's no telling what this lunatic is going to do next. So he scared the kids into not calling...what about anybody else? No eye witnesses to the brutal attack moments ago either? They could have called the police and the police traced him to the house.

NOBODY called the police...it's amazing and a glaring plot hole in an otherwise great movie.

reply

To be honest, I did mean any of them, but especially the scene where he was on the front lawn. I mean, how could the wife just stand there.
It just seemed a bit unbelievable, which is a shame, cos I loved the rest of the film!

A- What the last guy said, they were being bullied. It's the same logic as the whole "tell any teachers and I'll batter you" loophole

B- The ending was much more poignant this way. If he'd just been arrested, nobody would had have to really "prove" themselves.

Yes, I recall the threat he made to the kids, but why didn't the mom call the police? Or any of the neighbors for that matter? You think the mom or any of the other neighbors would have been intimidated by Morell? Most adults saw him as a weak individual who was all talk and no action (though he took action with that guy who was hitting on that girl, but that was impulsive, nothing that he talked out first).

Bullocks. They could have had time to prove themselves and then at the last minute the police show up to arrest him.

reply

Who's to say that the police weren't called?
There's only a minute between the confrontation in the garden and the end of the scene.

Just because we didn't see it doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

reply

That's true I suppose. But the wife was at the window the whole time. Surely they would have shown her ringing them

reply

Huh whaaaa? I hope you don't use that logic for other movies! If it didn't happen on screen, it didn't happen. Maybe there's a deleted scene somewhere, but even a police car rolling down the street before he took off would have been OK and given some kind of indication the phone call took place off screen. And if they didn't want to break up the scene with the phone call, they could have at least shown somebody looking out from their window and picking up the phone to indicate that's what was about to happen.

Sorry, Oldboy.
It was actually intended for the poster above you.

put it this way, whats more satisfying for the audience? morell being beat up by an angry dad or the police arresting him?

police ideas abit dull

personally i like to see people like that getting a kick :)

reply

Personnally, I would have liked to have seen both. Maybe after he had run off, we then see the police going to his flat and it is wrecked where he has completely lost it or something.....I have clearly thought about this far too much! lol.
But I definately think that it would have been netter if he had been arrested, or possibly put into a mental institution. I mean, let's face it, when someone is that messed up, hes bound to act in the same way to someone else, and maybe even beat someone to a pulp again!

reply

I'd say Morell getting his ass handed to him by an angry dad THEN being hauled off and tasered by the police would have been VERY satisfying.

damienoujia - I'm more concerned about your literal take.

You must have hated Donnie Darko.

reply

well if you listened to the dvd commentary meadows says that the police never turn up and they are just afraid to call them in case Morell comes back. Meadows says "places like this are self governing"

I mean they live in a small rural town that has a very community feel to it and once they start calling the police everyone in town knows about the incident.

reply

the law never figures in shane meadows films...
think of the leone influence...

reply

you guys wanna know why they didnt call the ploice... come to utoxeter or anywhere in the midlands... by the time police show up... anything that was gonna happen would've happend.

It's obvious that the police can't do very much. They can't be at the house all the time in case Morell comes round and attacks them. And based on the unsuccessful rape attempt and the threats, it is unlikely they have enough to put him in prison for a long time.

Luckily they had an extremely hard guy in the form of Romeo's dad, and having him deal with it was clearly the most effective means for dispatching Morell.

reply

Feck the cops! They probably were called and turned up four hours later...happened to me in similar circumstances.
I loved when dad turned up and twatted that nutter!

Great film, always watch it when it's on!
