Well it was filmed in a village called Calverton, in Nottingham shire, which is the east midlands. We are not north or south.

Morell's car seem very late 70s and there were a lot of polo necks on display which is an out of date look (sorry fans). Also one of them had a sports bag with that old skool stripey adidas sytle writing on it.
I think that Shane just wanted to create a sense of nostalgia rather than make an overt statement that it was set in the olden days. Obviously the film is autobiographical but then there was a Steps song in one scene!
That's exactly what I was gonna bring up. "5,6,7,8" by Steps was released in late 1997, so I would say it was set in 1998, a year prior to the film's release.
shareI agree it's very confusing to figure out when it's set, there is not one television in the whole film, no computers or mobile phones. There is a scene in the clothes shop where a song by Steps is playing and at one scene when Gavin is ill in bed, a toy figure of Rex the dinosaur from Toy Story can be seen, so im guessing 1996 or later.
