Need Help understanding ending of Shadow Mountain....

Both my husband and I are trying to sort out the ending of this movie and we are completely baffled.
WHY did Sherry (the young girl that ended up raped) take the gun and wrap it up and bury it? Why would she bury the gun? What purpose would she have to bury the gun? Why would she even think to bury the gun? It's one thing to have just thrown it in the field, but to take the time to bury it...makes absolutely no sense to both my husband & I.

If anyone has the answers to these questions and can explain the WHYS of all this, please let me know!!!

I just watched it last night on TV.
Yes, the whole gun bury at end seems as nonsense. But possible explanation could be that Sherry accidentaly took it (in hands) when stumbled on. Beeing scared, gun looked as good idea. Then, while went away realised that it may cause troubles to her, so decided to hide that 'evidence' - not knowing that it may actually help Dany. Just an idea...
Unfortunately, movie makers not cared to make this part clear for viewers. Instead lot of cliche, it would be much better. Agree ? :-)
