for the love of the man upstairs,WHY do so many people love this movie?

i'd like to say first that i'm a huge fan of bottom,have got all the videos and have seen them live in concert twice.
So obviously i've seen enough of richie and eddie to know what it is exactly about them that makes them such a holler.
Which brings me to the question of why do so many other bottom fans love this film becuase pretty much nothing about this flick resembles richie and eddie.

where to start?the whole setting of the movie is bland,dark and dingy.granted,the hotel isnt supposed to be a Hilton, but the use of lighting in this film is almost non existent.it wouldnt be so bad if the rest of the film overshadowed this but as it turns out,every other aspect of the film coincides,which just makes the movie depressing to view.

the acting in some parts of the film is rubbish aswell.not 1 of the characters,apart from possibly vincent cassel,seems to get into their role and give it their all.
if i didnt know their faces so well i wouldnt have been shocked knowing that it wasnt richie and eddie on our screens at all because as i say its just not them.
the jokes are bland, with punchlines that constantly fall flat,apart from possibly the odd exception.To me its a far cry from the richie and eddie i know and love,i was still waiting for the first laugh after a good half hour of viewing.its as if the whole film was made up of the bad bits of the series that never made it to the final cuts.

I'm speaking here from a biased view because as i've mentioned,i'm a huge fan of the Bottom series....So any1 who isnt a fan of the show who sees this movie,you have been warned.

As a long-time fan of BOTTOM who lives in the U.S., I was thrilled to finally lay hands on a bootleg of GHP last night and watch it for the first time. Frankly, I cannot understand why a Rik and Ade fan would have any problems with this movie. It's nasty, crude, infantile, and extremely violent - all the things that made Bottom such a delight. They were SO Richard and Eddie! I laughed my arse off when they beat each other up in the kitchen during breakfast! And the rubber underpants? Come on!

Eddie speaks in a really rubbish hi pitched voice in GHP.
They're definitely different characters. I love Bottom it's one of my favourite tv shows, but this film was a real dissapointment.

Some of it was filmed just down the road from my old house as well.

The film certainly doesn't come close to the T.V series but overall it's decent but I can understand why people would feel that the film just isn't true Bottom.

BOTTOM is quite possibly my most watched DVDs, all three series are simply outstanding and I never ever get bored of them. Sadly, GHP is not a patch on the TV shows. I think the movie suffers the same fate as most other half-hour comedy shows converted to cinema, it rarely works out well and shouldn't be done. GHP is the only Richard Richard and Edward Elizabeth Hitler (although their names change in GHP) material I avoid!!!

I'm with the thread starter as well. I am a massive Bottom fan and have been for many years but I just didn't like this film at all. I didn't find it funny, just stupid and uninspired. It was a big disappointment for me.

This Movie in my opinion is a totally different story to the bottom seris they are not connected.

first of all bottom live 3 holligans island was peformed and released on video before guest house paradisio and they explian how they got from their home in hammersmith to the island now the next live stage show an @*&" oddity picks up where the last stage show left off still on the island.

so ghp is not connected to the bottom seris it's more like a spin off story rik and ade are playing more or less the same charcters with different names references to the seris are still there they are still two unlikeable no hopers and the mindless violence is still there.

before this movie i always wondered what a bottom movie would have been like i would haveliked to see a movie that was set in hammersmith with the simular settings i.e the flat and the lamb and flag with some of the other regular character such as Dave hedgehog spudgun and dick head i don't know what the story line would have been but i think it would have made a better movie.

agreed with this, the characters are similar but unrelated to bottom, i dont think GHP is as good as Bottom but its not bad at all, I find them both enjoyable to watch, One thing I found interesting is that there is very similar characters in "The Comic Strip".

"Mr Jolly Lives Next Door" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095664/ ) has the duo in it and a lot of slapstick violence and drinking, Peter Cook also makes a very memorable appearance.

I consider this episode of the Comic Strip one of the links between The Young Ones, Filthy Rich & Catflap, The Dangerous Brothers and Bottom, same shtick but thats what I watched these programs for in the first place, Theres no hidden meaning its just meant to be a bit of fun.

i think (i cant remember now) but i think i saw this film before i saw the series, and then i became obsessed with it, but the part where he takes the watch off simon pegg, HAHA that was the funniest part probably, i cant resist laughing whenever rick says the word Bastard, lol, anyway, i aggree with you, now that i know the show so well i feel bored when i watch the movie, the trouble is thought, even though they did a lot of live stuff (which i loved) they only did 3 series and that just wasnt enough, i mean everybody knows every line in it,ur right and i hope your happy

Simply because it is hilarious and it is there 25th anniversay movie according to Rik Mayall. It may not have the greatest script in the world though it is Richie and Eddie at there finest once again plus the supporting cast is marvellous.

I enjoyed the series but I really didn't enjoy this movie. I bought it and took it back as I thought it was that crap! One of the worst movies I have ever seen!

COME ON now that is unfair, the move is highly enjoyable for any Richie and Eddie fan. Okay it is not the best movie ever and dosent have a of a live audience nor is some if the jokes as good as the TV series but it is still an enjoyable Richie and Eddie experience. I suppose it cones down to comedic taste in the end.

A big fan of the Bottom TV series; less so for the shows, although the first two were pretty decent.

Had high hopes for the film, but then Rik had his nasty accident in 1997/8, leaving most of the script down to Ade, and I think it shows.

A very uneven film, to be honest; and you're right about the lighting too. Not many exterior shots either, which would have helped the film "breathe" a little bit; instead we have rather claustrophobic interior shots that became a little oppressive at times.

I enjoyed watching Eddie & Ritchie reprise their Bottom characters though; but the film was just crying out for a better story, tighter editing & more energy in the pacing.

And the ending came out of nowhere! It was like the writers had got bored and just wanted to sign-off as quickly as possible before going down the pub for a pint!

Perhaps they would have been better off just calling the film "Bottom:The Movie" and be done with it! After-all, there have been quite a number of successful British sitcoms that ended on the big screen, while retaining their original titles (Steptoe, Porridge, Rising Damp etc). Okay, not all of these spin-offs worked on the big screen, but I'm sure "Bottom: The Movie" would have been better received than the rather random GHP.

I would definitely watch it again though, if only because I love Ade & Rik, but I wouldn't rank it above the TV series.

I did not like it after the first viewing but after the second viewing it was a lot funnier. I was just used to a studio audience in the TV show.

Granted, it's not as good as 'Bottom' but still loads of laughs from Richie and Eddie. It's showing now on ITV4 as a tribute to Rik Mayall who died suddenly last week.

Finally saw the movie and gotta agree with the OP. I watched all of Bottom, I watched all 5 of Bottom Live, too. I am not put off by them or their work by any stretch. You can argue it has the hallmarks of things that make people love Bottom, and to some extent that is true. However, the plot was what was weak. They joke (frequently and more often in the live shows) that their plots are thin, but this climaxes with an orgy of over the top vomiting and that's it. I think they're both more clever than that. It could have been, should have been a better movie. More things happening, more of a plot, and all the vulgarity set against it. This just felt like it was rushed or forced, it doesn't feel inspired at all. I'm glad they got to make the live shows after this, just to show they could make something movie-length that was better constructed.
