Did they ever explain why Rick got custody of his kids?

I do not recall any specific reason, other than maybe it was an mutual decision for Rick to have them during the week and Karen on weekends (and then flip-flopped). They shared custody.

Karen only became "unstable" when she could see that Eli was going off the rails and she wasn't able to stop him (and Rick was no help to her with Eli either). That combined with the finality of Rick remarrying and Jessie's health problems proved to be too much for Karen and she lost it.

One of the reasons I was hoping for a fourth season was because Eli was headed for jail the way he was going.
