Lily and Rick are ill-suited.

I am almost done with Season 1 and I don't like them as a couple. I don't know if Sela is just a cold actress, but Rick seems way more into Lily than she is into him and sometimes she comes across as so selfish.

I think Lily is meant to be a bit self-centered. I seem to recall one of her friends actually mentions it.

I agree that Lily and Rick are not a good match. Lily is an extrovert and Rick is very much an introvert so they are going against their own natures by hooking up with each other.

Rick just wants to be loved but Lily is looking for a man like her father who will take charge of her and her family and look after them all which means she is a selfish woman when you get right down to it. It's all about her needs not his.

I don't know why Rick left Karen, I thought he would have been better off with her than with Lily. Not to mention the divorce being bad for both Jessie and Eli.

My issue is that it mostly seems to be one-sided. Rick bends backwards to make her happy. She cheats on him with her ex and her apology is to make Rick partially responsible for her poor decision. During that scene, my friend and I were thinking that he could do better, not thinking that they were meant for each other.

But I am not too fond of the Manning family in general. I like Rick's children more than I like Lily's and Lily's sister annoys me.

I can't remember, but was it ever stated why Rick and Karen got a divorce?

Yep the Mannings run on emotion first all the way through to last without a pause for breath. High maintenance, exhausting people to be around. And Judy was even more self-centred than her sister Lily.

From memory Rick said more or less that he felt under pressure from Karen in that she wanted him to become a successful architect rather than one who did just okay. So he drove himself and the business (putting in long hours) for years to become the success she wanted and in the process he became a different person. More distant and less feeling. From that I guess the viewer is left to fill in the dots to their relationship eventually breaking down.

Even though I thought Rick should have stayed with Karen he wasn't even a particularly good match with her, but he was an even worse match with Lily.
