why did they stop making these?

I think kids today need these more than any other generation,

Jill: Libby, these foreign exchange students are sitting at our table
Libby: Well deport them

reply

I think they stopped making them because of the rise of the afternoon talk show. People didn't like having their talk shows interuppted for this programming geared towards young people. But I agree young people should see these.

Sadly, I think trash TV with the likes of Maury Povich made this type of programming unfashionable, and "kids these days" would rather watch "Sexy Secrets Revealed" on the Tyra Banks show. Of course, the rise of cable didn't help either. The networks probably think programming like this is Nickelodeon's job.

reply

lol They do need programs like this nowadays. As for Maury, that's not like a Afterschool Special in no way shape or form, but it does give a message during the DNA Test, protect yourself, because you don't want to have to deal with a specific no good person who has your child in the future.

reply

But that doesn't excuse the fact "Maury" and "Jerry Springer" are exploitative trash.

Things that killed Afterschool Specials:

HBO's Lifestories: Families in Crisis
Nickelodeon
Afternoon Talk Shows
Disney Channel
MTV

"You win some, you lose some. But you live, you live to fight another day."

reply

Things that killed one of these particular 'specials' (My Mom's Having A Baby):

-It was badly written

-Its advice is unsound

-Its now outdated 40 years later

Schools teach better advice than what's shown in this crappy program (and if they don't, you should be making sure your school system does teach 'the facts of life' starting in grade five-it's done here in the school boards of Ontario, Canada where I live.)

These shows are just crap to begin with, maybe, and SCTV parodied then quite well once?

reply

kids don't run home and turn on the tv after school anymore

it needs to be something like the twitter after school special or facebook after school special

or something they can watch on their cell phone

We watched several ABC after school specials in high school, I graduated in 2010. The writing was awful, the acting was terrible, and the moments were often times completely blown out of proportion. I remember laughing with the whole class, and often times the teacher, at just about the entire movie. We got the point, but when telling kids not to do drugs, you probably shouldn't blatantly lie to their faces or provide an ABC After School Special. It's not that other programs took over, they were just completely and utterly terrible and everyone knew it, so why watch it when the world exists?

reply

So true, I really enjoyed the afterschool specials on CBS and NBC.
