Help - Is this the movie I saw on cable.

If this is the movie I saw on cable I really enjoyed it. I need some help finding out though.

I got interested in Zatoichi from Takeshi KItano's remake which I got on DVD but had never watched the other films. One night though I saw that a Zatoichi film was on tv and flipping to it and not seeing Kitano I knew this was not the rmake and decided to see one of the original films.

There were a few scenes that are memorable and may help pinpoint this film.

In one scene Ichi-san goes to a gambling parlor and loses his first hand by throwing the dice outside the cup. He uses this as a ploy when he later throws the dice outside the cup but puts the actual dice he is betting on inside the cup. He beats the house and they come to rough him up as he is leaving. The mistress of the establishment scolds them and tells them to treat him well. They give him a lantern (So they can trackc him down more easily at night). Later we see Ichi walking the roads as men surround him. He extinguishes the lantern and the minute they are ready to attack Ichi dispatches every one of them in about five seconds. The woman then comes over to congratulate him.

We also see a scene with him taking a bird's egg he found on the ground after trying to return it to the mother. We see him at the house of a large family with a lot of kids where he eats with tehm and the bird hatches.

There is also a scene of him posing with his cane for a sketch after giving the artist a piece of bread or cake with beans inside (I'm assuming Azuki beans). There's also a great deal of discussion about his mirror in teh film.

I would have gotten the movie name except that when I hit the info button on my cable box it came up reading "Zatoichi (2003) Takeshi Kitano stars helping two sisters.. etc.." Due to the misinformation I am trying to figure out what the actual movie I was watching is. I am assuming it is this one because the copyright date was 1989 at the end of the film.

Yup, that's the one.

Yes, it took me all day to research on the net to finally find out that this is the one I saw too. This was my first experience to the series and I am totally hooked, just by this one film. I loved it!

This is that one and it had the tatooed woman in the bath scene as well. Don't forget that one.

Definetly Zato 89. BTW, for those who really liked this one, you should know the older films are in a different style - the modern Japanese style that many Japanese action films have from the late 80s until now (best characterized by long scenes of nothing happening, with a sort of introspective calm, then suddenly explosive violence) isn't really present in any of the older titles. Not to say you won't also like the old ones.

The older films also usually concentrate harder on the figure of Zatoichi than this one. Still though.

I just watched this flick on cable and they're still misrepresenting it as the Takashi Kitano version. You would think after all this time that they would have corrected the guide info describing the film. Whose job is it, anyway? They should fire him and hire me; I could use the work. ;-)

They are showing the 2003 version as well on cable. I bought the '89 version because a guy at work had seen it on cable and I wanted to see it. I discussed it with him and then realized he had watched the 2003 version on cable and I bought this one (Zato 26, or Zato '89).

this movie is pretty good but the older ones i have seen are far superior.

I totally agree with you, while this is an excellent movie you can tell from it's production that in itself it's paying homage to katsu-san, considering that he had "retired" form the part, he was asked to come back and make this movie.
