Shamisen singing scene

Is it possible to find the song and musician info for the woman singing in the gambling hall with all the poeple shouting and cheering? I know it's called Jongara Bushi. She's keeping the rhythm on some drums while a dude is jamming on the shamisen. This is awesome music, with a funky righteous edge to it. I must have it! This exact version.

Any info would be mucho appreciated!

There is a soundtrack to the movie. I think you may have your work cut out for you to find it, because it had an asia only release.

It's very typical of Japanese folk music. I suggest delving into the subject; many discoveries await you there.

Ah so, master yoda.

so would the style of singing be considered Enka or does it just sound similar?
My knowledge is more towards Nihon no Pop (J-Pop, J-Urban, Mixture-kei and a little J-Rock) - basically the stuff I used to DJ at anime events. The closest I come to Enka outside of eating in a Japanese restaurant (or working in one) would probably be Ondo music which I was introduced to by Crayon Chin-chan best of sdtk, Shingo Mama and Hello! Project shuffle groups. I do like taiko, but I haven't been too exposed to folk music aside from Asian movie & tv soundtracks.

Time for a Pocky break...

You soound like you know more than your fair share of Japanese music. Cool!

Have you seen the movie and heard the Chanteuse singing with the shamisen at the inn? That's what I'm scouring the earth for. It is the best version of Tongara Bushi I've ever come across.

I used to see a lot of PVs (Promotional Videos, Japanese term for music videos) back when the D.A.M.N./'bunko.theppn.org' Asian music torrent site was still around, I've seen definitely over 1,000 or so music videos from the genres I mentioned above. That site was overloaded with traffic and went byebye around Xmas 2004 and I lost probably a few hundred albums of Asian music in a harddrive crash last year. My American music was all ripped off my own cds so it was easy to re-rip it all. It's been harder to keep up since then (without joining up and keeping your computer running all day to upload a bunch of stuff) it's harder to get stuff, but luckily I can watch quite a bit on youtube these days before they get yanked (and subsequently re-uploaded by other users). I don't get to always see stuff the month it comes out anymore and am trying to catch up on some fave bands lately to see what I've missed. I just caught up on 2 years of MoMusu msuic videos by watching youtube, I think they've suffered since their best members left (sotsugyou) and I can see why their sales have plunged. I'm more current on the major J-Urban bands from SO to m-flo, etc. Since I'm not DJing for conventions anymore it isn't as crucial to me to follow the Oricon charts like I used to.

I own all the HVE released (non AnimEigo) Zatoichi films on dvd, so I'm only missing the 7 AnimEigo ones and #14 from the 26 films (thanks largely to some buy 2 get 1 sales). I've watched an import of the Beat Takeshi film, but wasn't sure about MiramAxe dvd not being cut like they often do so I don't own a copy yet til I get around to getting a good English subbed uncut disc from either Japan, HK or S.Korea whichever transfer is best.

Unfortunately, I'm not all that well versed with traditional Japanese music, wish I could say that I had that knowledge, kinda want to learn to play the shamisen someday too after seeing/hearing it in so many films.

That's all vey fascinating, but you didn't answer my question. Have you seen the scene and heard the tune in it, sung by petite hottie chanteuse with the shamisen jamming with her while she belts out the rhythm on the drums¿? Love that song!

I actually contacted the Japan Foundation and asked them if they could get me a copy of an album that they commissioned back in the mid '90s, featuring Bill Laswell on bass, called the Flying Mijinko Band. They cut a version of Tsongara Bushi. Anyway, the Foundation first said yes, then cam back and told me at the request of the artist, they were destroying any remaining copies of the album. Disappointing, but it wasn't the version from the film, anyway.

The search continues!

Seen the movie and remember the scene and song and liked it. Is a shame it isn't readily available.

That's it! I just wanted a little validation and sympathy.

Cheers!

I might be able to help. I've come across a video Mp3 extractor recently and a tool to edit music. I recently got this dvd and when you play it, it plays that same song you are talking about at the title screen. If someone could record it and post it somewhere for me to download I can rip the song and put it up for you. I've been searching endlessly for this movies soundtrack as there are a lot of other songs I loved from the movie. For now I'm just looking for the trailer as it plays the song at the end and I'm more likely to find the trailer to download than anything else.
