Cousins?

Were Lola and Wayne really cousins? I got the feeling that Wayne invented a relationship with the family for the landlord's benefit so that he would be allowed to collect the mail. He seemed confused when Lola showed up identifying herself as LiSan's daughter. He also seemed to call her "cousin" in a kind of ironic tone of voice.

And of course, their relationship took an odd turn for first cousins.
