about a scene...

what does it mean when he is laying in the church facing the floor and with his arms wide open like in the cruxifition possition?

reply

This is the way that many Christians pray. It is a totally submissive posture meant to show total submission and reverence to God. Think of it as a very, very deep bow before God. I think that the fact that he looked like he is is on the crucifix is coincidental, or at least not important.

Just for the record.
Not many christians pray in that position. I have never done it myself. Only priests. And of course I'm not a priest.

“I teach you to lie, cheat, and steal, and when I turn my back you wait in line?”

Correct-omundo.

It is a sacred position reserved only for priests.
It is performed when they receive the sacrament of holy orders,
which is the completion of a journey of years of study, practice
and acceptance of the other vows of faith that are required by
their individual order.
Within a church or other place of worship it is a position of prayer
reserved only for those who are ordained.
It is actually inappropriate for we of the congregation to assume
this in public.
In a ceremony, or a time of crisis, it is the priest speaking to god
serving for the world/all of us.
As such, it has special signicance.
In the context of the film, then, it represents special knowledge
of the catholic faith upon the part of the film makers to impart to us
that he is fully aware of his priesthood and all the vows of faith
and committment to his religion he has made and reminds the viewer
that whatever we might think of his human actions, he does them with
thought and committment to a higher purpose.

For example, the sexual tension - While we certainly are expected
to understand he is human, it doesn't truly exist as we might expect from
a romantic relationship, but that what does exist is at a higher plane as he does honor and respect her as a woman.

does that help?

It was very very helpful, thank you.
