Was reckless driving still funny in 2001?

Hated the "comedy" scene with Olivia Williams driving Banderas from the airport, veering all over the road and narrowly missing several fatal collisions as she searched in her handbag, exchanged jokey dialogue with Banderas, and even borrowed a cigarette from a passing car. It felt like something from an 80s romcom.
