Well the thing is if you get a lot of money and want to keep being rich and powerful you have to be ruthless, otherwise it's your head on the block. Like Bertha(Laura Linney) is purely malicious and totally cruel but being a woman of intelligence in that patriarchal society, the only kind of strong woman she can be is a hypocritical banshee.
