It was a terribly sad ending, Lily needs a hug! SHAME!
She should have called me, I would invite her to come live with me, AND I'd be nice to her!

This move is a masterpiece. It shows the terrible treatment of women by the society in which they were left to depend only on mans will. If they don't find a husband they would be concidered unworthy. Not much has changed today. Woman is a sex object, she has obtained a right to be "equal" in work, but she is underpaid, left to strugle between motherhood and work. Woman is the backboan of the society, she is the first school of man, yet man have always treated them like *beep* When I see a naked woman on the bilboard, makes me want to throw up. Is that the respect we give to mothers and daughters?

I know exactly the same case of a woman who has killed herself because of the man. Every guy she fell in love with left her after using her. And she was hopping to get married. She was a beauty. When the last idiot who was divorsed with 2 kids and no hair left her, she was so broken that she killed herself.

I like this movie a lot too. Compare with Age of Innocence which was based on a novel of the same writer, I love this movie as much as I dislike Age of Innocence.

reply

I agree. The Age of Innocence is such a huge disappointment for me, considering its cast, and by Scorcese no less! It's a shame because I love the novel as much as The House of Mirth.

IMO The House of Mirth is a much superior movie, in all aspects. It really explores the emotional side of the story and one can't help be affected. I love it tremendously, words can't express it.

They aren't really the same story first of all and the perspective and style of both film-makers is very different. Both novels are different too. The Age of Innocence is less accessible than The House of Mirth because it deals with the tragedy of a weak, quiet man, while The House of Mirth is about the tragedy of a beautiful, intelligent woman who's obviously a more stronger character. But then The House of Mirth is written in 1905 when the novel was still reeling from the effects of Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina while The Age of Innocence is written in 1920, looking at a past of more than 50 years.
