Gillian deserved an Oscar nomination

her character breaks my heart...great, great portrayal

I totally agree. I watched this movie years ago and was blown away by her performance. She got some nomations that year but no Oscar nod. Wonder who got the nods that year?

reply

I disagree . In fact , I didn't see any performance that I considered oscar worthy .

agreed 100%

Absolutelty tour de force performance by Anderson. I didn't realize from X-Files that she had such amazing range.

reply

In X-FILES, there never seemed to be much range of acting required...not even smiling or laughing, except when something odd happened....the mere appearance of the oddball trio of guys who would help Mulder.

I think she was a runner up, was featured in many articles predicting the nominations, but the movie didn't have much propagation, and she didn't get there in the end.
I believe Julia Roberts won in the end, and Juliette Binoche was nominated for Chocolat... go figure :(

But she had beaten everybody at the BAFTAs that year (British Independent Film Awards), as Best Actress, which I think is as equally important :)

reply

Have you seen all episodes of X files? Because what you said is simply not true.
And I do agree this was a great performance - but her work on the X Files still remains her best job in her whole career. The depth and range she showed in episodes like Beyond the Sea, Momento Mori, Pusher, Emily, The End, Redux I and II etc was above and beyond the quality of anything she's done here (which is very good).

She didn't become one of the very few actresses to win an Emmy, Golden Globe, Screen Actor's Guild award all together in the same year for nothing after all.

Watch the following clips if you haven't (though they don't even show 1/100th of the range she displayed in the XF):

A lot goes into a nomination. Kate Winslett would have got a nom whether she was actually better than Gillian or not (If you get my drift).

Lily was just so substantial a role and GA was very good with it.

It's ludicrous that Julia Roberts won a oscar for her terrible performance and yet anderson didn't even get nominated.

reply

GA was great in this, but the Oscar Roberts won should have gone to Ellen Burstyn for Requiem for a Dream.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

She won the Best Actress at British Independent Film Awards, and was nominated for awards by New York and Toronto film Critics. Sometimes, if a movie isn't seen enough, it doesn't have a chance at Oscars.

reply

Anderson is always a joy to watch on screen, Oscar nomination or not. She should be in every movie!
