differences between the film and the novel

hey can anyone talk about the differences between the film and the novel? and which one do you think is better.

reply

In the film adaptation of the novel:

1. A character important to the overall story, Gerty Farrish, is combined with Grace Stepney.

2. A character with a short, pivotal scene in the end is omitted entirely.

3. The ending has a different meaning.

The book is better IF a)you love reading older novels b) you love Edith Wharton in particular, and c) you can stand a story which is even more tragic than the film.

Could you please elaborate on the difference in meaning between the novel and the film?

There were few differences between the book and the movie. The director tried very hard to stay true to the book. Because of the different medium there had to be some adaptation. I think the expanded Grace character is a big improvement over the book.

The budget was only $6 million. It's insane how much was done with a period production with such a small budget.
