Uma ruined this movie

With every glaze, every spoken line, every anticipated emotion she was AWFUL! How could Beckinsale's (sp?)character not know that she was screwing the Prince she was so obvious. Every time I watch this movie, I have tried to get over her overacting and it is not possible, hell I had more reservations about Nick Nolte, which were unfounded he did a great job.

I agree, Thurman was terrible. They probably chose a hot young actress with no depth to make the film more commercial. Kate Beckinsale would have been a much better choice!
Bad miscasting helped make this the worst Merchant-Ivory film.

I guess I'm in the minority but I thought Thurman was fantastic.

The character she plays is shallow and childish and socially inept. She doesn't recognize the fact that people pity her because she is poor and beautiful. She didn't understand that Amerigo took advantage of her situation in life. Stupid girl, she thought he was really in love with her.

You are right even a child could see her coming from miles away. That was the point. Even someone as generous and mild as Maggie (and willfully obtuse on purpose) finally saw through her.

Its deeply ironic that the film begins with everyone thinking they had to protect Maggie from the facts of life. When at the end it was Charlotte they were all trying to protect.
