Oh what a giveaway.

You know the point at which I noticed Ghostwatch was a hoax? The point at which I noticed that the doctor woman was also visible advertising 'Bounce' on ITV at the time.

Hehe, I'm watching Bite Back on Ghostwatch on youtube and one of the makers of the program was saying that they went to the trouble of using actors who were on primetime tv and advertising as a way to show that they were using actors and it was a drama. According to her, that's exactly what was meant to give the game away. I could think of better ways myself, but there you go. It's an interesting watch, here's the link:

What gave it away for me is the cast list in the Radio Times (or it might have been the TV times) before the broadcast not to mention the terrible terrible performances. My younger brother was beside himself getting scared, insisting it was real, and I just kept waving the cast list in his face but he wasn't having any of it.

Irrational people lapped this up.

I was 10 years old. Rational thought doesn't enter your mind when you're absolutely scared rigid =P

Still, my memory of the show was more terrifying than watching it on DVD 13 years later, but there will always be that scared child in me now whenever I watch this.

And the fact that it was advertised as part of the Screen One series of dramas, and had the Screen One logo and a dirty big caption saying "Written by Steven Volk" at the start.

Watching it in the Netherlands, I had no access to any tv guides or newspapers and like so many others missed or didn't register the beginning.
The show falls or stands on its ability to make you think it is real.
So if you watched it with any knowledge of it being a fake, of course the impact was a lot less.
Which is a shame.
I feel very very lucky to have been fooled by this show almost till the very end.
It gave me one of the most memorable tv events of my life.

Complaining about mistakes is almost as bad as complaining about complaining about mistakes.

sadly the BBC wouldn't dare to not advertise it as fiction. as it was it's amazing they didn't chose to have "this is a fictional drama" as a permanent caption throughout the film

It isn't a "hoax", it is fiction. There is a fundamental difference.
