Buck revealed to Chuck early on he was, more or less, a child trapped in a man’s body. That something wasn’t quite right about him. But he continued to make himself available to him, which I found surprising. Frankly, I’m surprised he even flew in for Buck’s mother’s funeral. It appeared they hadn’t spoken or even written in years.
He hardly made himself available to him. Quite the opposite actually. After Buck moves to LA, it's Chuck's girlfriend who does the inviting. Chuck is quite resistant but he can't tell her why so he just rolls with it.
When Chuck flies in for the funeral, he has no idea that Buck stayed stuck in childhood. I guess he's only going to the funeral because he thinks he's going to find a grown up he used to be best friends with and he knew his mother.
