..at the end, they're being chased by a swarm of killer mutant bats, and what does lou dimond philips do as a reaction? he turns and fires at them.

with a pistol

and he missed every shot

what, he figured if he got one, the entire swarm would drop dead?

Watch that part again. He hits a few of them. Cops are trained to fire at anything that threaten them.

He might have thought that if he hit a few of them, it would slow the rest of them down if they see projectiles flying at them, giving the humans a better chance at escaping them.
