question

why did rosetta give up her job at last? because of her mother?

reply

I'm not sure....
Either she felt bad about, more or less, stealing the job....
....or she already had decided to kill herself...

I think she thought if she got a job her life's going to be better. but then when she went back, she was stunned when seeing her mother drunk again. She was too disappointed and decided that nothing's going to help even if she's got a job.

the self-accusation hopeless filled into her.

she was going to kill herself.

While watching the film we learn that the only reason why Rosseta is always in struggle in her life is because she knows the only hope for improving her miserable fate is through hard work and honesty. Yes, at the end she got a job, and a job dignifies in theory, but not a stolen or currupted job. A non honest life doesn't deserved to be lived, like her mother's life.

Rosetta decided to end her life with her mom and lets gas flow out into the trailer. But before that, she calls her boss to say that she won't be coming to work anymore, like a decent employee she tries to be. When the bottle runs out of gas (the noise it made stopped), she is dedicated to get a new one and we see her struggle until she breaks down and maybe she realizes that she needs a friend when Riquet picks her up.

Interesting to read here that most people didn't notice her suicide attempt.

actually i did notice the suicide attempt. it was a very touching moment. i also wanted to say that when she lost her string (or whatnot) in the river. her friend tried to help her, but accidentally fell, and started drowning. It took her a lot of time to decide whether to help him or not. If he dies, she might get his job, and also to feel what her mom felt when she was drowning. And, her mom didnt help her. overall, i loved the movie. its hard to put urself in her shoes and feel what she is experiencing when u r well-off.

She felt hopeless when she came home and found her mother passed out, she desperatly wanted a "real" job because she thought that would give her a normal life, she also wanted to break free from her mother.
she felt like if her mother had destroyed all her hopes, she decides to stop trying and thinks that Suicide is the only way out.
She called her boss simply because she was acting like the good worker she was.
I believe she felt guilty about what she had done to her friend also.
That last scene is so heartbreaking but somehow I believe Rosetta saw te glimpse of hope she needed
