FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A Fort Bragg soldier charged as a teenager in a notorious New Jersey rape case shot and wounded his estranged wife and her boyfriend, then killed himself, authorities said.

Spc. Richard Timothy Corcoran, 34, entered wife Michele A. Corcoran's house Thursday night and shot William Paul Seifert several times. Michele Corcoran ran outside, where she was shot in the arm, said Cumberland County sheriff's Maj. Sam Pennica.

Corcoran then went back inside the house and shot himself, Pennica said.

Seifert, who is also a Fort Bragg soldier, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Michele Corcoran, 30, was treated and released. The Corcorans' 7-month-old baby was in the house but was not hurt.

Richard Corcoran was involved in a 1989 case in affluent Glen Ridge, N.J., in which a group of popular high school athletes allegedly raped a mentally retarded teenage girl with a broom and a baseball bat.

Corcoran, the son of a Glen Ridge police lieutenant, was among seven boys who were arrested and charged, but charges against him were dropped the day before his trial was to begin.

Three other boys were sentenced to jail terms, one was given probation and two others were ordered to perform community service under plea agreements.

In 1997, Corcoran won a $200,000 settlement in a federal civil rights lawsuit that charged Essex County prosecutors with malicious prosecution.

Corcoran enlisted in the Army in June 2000. He was assigned to Fort Bragg in 2001 and in late 2002 was deployed to Afghanistan with the 7th Special Forces Group, said Sgt. Kyle Cosner, a spokesman for the Army Special Operations Command.

Corcoran returned home in 2003 and was transferred to the 1st Special Warfare Training Group in August of that year.

A 1997 book, ``Our Guys: The Glen Ridge Rape and the Secret Life of the Perfect Suburb,'' explored the town's willingness to rally around the perpetrators and disparage the victim.

Also I found this posted at a Law & Order website that did a show based on the case - http://www.tv.com/law-and-order/damaged/episode/9639/summary.html

This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the Glen Ridge rape. In 1989, seven Glen Ridge boys (twins Kyle and Kevin Scherzer, brothers Chris and Paul Archer, and friends Richard Corcoran, Bryan Grober and Peter Quigley) were involved in the sexual assault of Leslie Faber, a young woman that many had tormented for years. Although the boys were convicted early on, numerous appeals kept three of them out of prison for years. Bryant Grober, Chris Archer and the Scherzer twins were charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault on a mentally defective person through force and coercion, four counts of aggravated sexual criminal contact and conspiracy to commit the afore-mentioned assaults. Grober, who was the first of the boys to have sexual contact with the victim, was convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to three years probation. Kyle Scherzer was sentenced to seven years and released in December 1999 after serving only 30 months of his sentence. Chris Archer was sentenced to fifteen years and released in August 2001 after serving four years. Kevin Scherzer was sentenced to fifteen years and released in November 2002 after serving five years. Richard Corcoran was charged with aggravated sexual assault but the charges against him were dropped prior to going to trial. In February of 2005, Corcoran, then a Fort Bragg soldier, committed suicide after shooting his estranged wife Michele and her boyfriend, William Paul Seifert. Peter Quigley and Paul Archer both pled guilty to endangering the welfare of a mentally incompetant person, and both were ordered to perform community service.

That's crazy that some woman would marry him.

I found Chris Archer. He lives in Kill Devil Hills, NC.
Here is his webpage at the national sex offender registry:

And here is Kevin Scherzer's:

Oddly, there is no page for his twin brother, Kyle.

School's for people who are boring and ugly and serious. And you, button, are none of those.

Good. That piece of excrement will not be missed. The herd has been thinned.

Agreed. What a shame a woman and her boyfriend had to be gunned down in the process. (I wonder how they are now.) Her only crime was being foolish enough to marry him.

I remember the ft. Bragg
shooting now. I was a parole officer and i had 1 of the dirtbags on my caseload. They should have gotten longer sentences. Crazy case. I also met prosecutor Laurino recently. Seems like a great guy. I definitely should see the movie or read the book.
