I gave this movie a 9 and here is why--

Red Planet! What a movie. Yeah, some folks (if not the majority) simply do not like it.

But that is where I see gold between the lenses and cracks of the red rock. Red Planet is simply an entertaining movie that doesn't need to challenge the viewer as much as it drives them to a film that just wants to entertain you for two hours.

You could complain for the incompetent characters, the faulty science, or even just the pace that didn't deliver well on time. Whatever your ill-will is towards the film, is none of my concern.

Unlike's its twin sister -- Mission to Mars -- which is pretentious and overbearing upon the audience. Red Planet has a simple plot with interesting tech that gravitates a certain keen interest within me. When I watch this film, the philosophical view points, the scientific flaws, and the sometimes ridiculous action is all I want in a film that is not trying to pull a '2001' on me. It is, what it is.

Cheesy science fiction!

The actors do their best and often times succeed. The plot hangs in there without trying to be smart (which often can make it stupid). The music is fantastic! And most of all, it's a movie that you could if you're bored, waste time with and certainly not feel guilty about.

This is not a movie that will be an instant classic. This is not a movie that will be remembered forever in the annals of cinema history.

It is for all its worth, an enjoyable film.

I completely agree, I also thought that this movie was awesome :D
But I also liked Mission To Mars :D

Written by a kid who only has read some Sci-Fi comics. I gave it 2/10.

I pity you for rating it 2/10. Perhaps, one day, you'll learn something and be able to enjoy cool movies. ;)

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with being easy to entertain.

Off topic but I have a similar philosophy. In life you'll find that the most inbred, retarded, backwards idiots have the biggest *beep* eating grins going almost 24/7. I've dedicated my life to becoming more like them one doobie and one brain cell at a time.

This movie was in no way shape or form anywhere NEAR a 9. From a strictly Science standpoint it was wrong and badly done.

And clearly you have little to no real knowledge of scifi. Even from a science fiction standpoint this movie is rubbish. Sure there are some saving qualities but the majority of them are no good. The only people that seemed to enjoy this film are people who didn't grow up reading SciFi.

reply

Watching it on Syfy right now. I'll be generous and give this a 6.

So far.

I also gave it 2/10 because I love sci fi, and movies like this give the genre a bad name.

reply

2/10 is about right for this piece of junk.

Doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good film. The other one Mars flick I recently viewed, The Last Days on Mars, was solid 8/10.

Well, having been closely embedded in science for a living for the last 30 or so years, I for one enjoyed it too. If I wanted depth I'd go with Hawking. If I wanted *clever* depth, I'd go with Feynman.

The primary significant difference between me & the other responder? I dunno; maybe I don't feel as superior & summarily dismissive as he does. :)

The qualities you list don't make this a 9/10. It's fine if you enjoy the film, but the whole point of the scale is that 10s and 9s are truly outstanding movies, not just " hey I kinda liked it."

Absolutely, well said, I thought the same. From what the OP posted you'd expect him to have given it a respectable 7. 9 was exaggerating his point to absurdity.

The science wasn't too bad for a sci-fi movie.

That's hilarious that NASA refused to advise on the film. Good call on their part.

I agree...it's way too underrated. Thanks for your post and comment
