The most poorly organized trip to Mars in movie history

The ship got up out of commission at the worst time from a solar flare.
The concept of using hefty bags to softening their fall proved a bad one.
That wacky space robot was left in the attack mode.
The stuff sent up in advance was all damaged.

They also forgot to pack their American Express card. lol

reply

I wonder if NASA just wanted to get rid of them.

reply

Damn, you weren't paying attention at all during this movie, were you?

Solar flare damaged the ship. Hefy bags saved their lives. Robot was damaged during the landing and put into attack mode. Stuff sent up in advance was only damaged after the fact, due to the bugs.

reply

Excuses, excuses! I thought they were supposed to prepare for contingencies like those anyway.

reply

Solar flares take time to travel from sun to planets and they are always predicted before they happen. As soon as solar flare was detected from earth, the ground control would warn them and they would put their solar shields up. There is no way the flare would hit them without any warning.

That aside, the movie wasn't bad at all.. It is entertaining, and mostly accurate as far as science go. Although I did not understand why did it take 40 minutes for the communication to reach earth from mars orbiter. That too did not make any sense.

My job is to watch stupid movies and complain about them on IMDB

reply

It's been awhile since I watched this. Was it 40 minutes one way or round trip?

The time it takes for radio waves to travel between orbiting bodies in a solar system depends on their locations in their personal orbits and, therefore, in relation to one another. For Mars-Earth communication the least amount of time for this is about 4 minutes and the most is about 24 minutes. That's why I asked if the 40 minute reference was round trip or not because round trip the actual delay times would be equal to about 40 minutes(give or take depending on the actual distance Mars is from Earth). Hell, even communication between Earth and the Moon has a several second delay and that's just a "stone's throw away" in terms of astronomical distances. lol

It'll be like Luke Duke and the other guy.
Really?
Yeah.
NO!

reply

It seems almost every trip to Mars seems to be poorly organised!

Its that man again!!

reply

12 billion people dependent on this mission and they send this group of morons?

For that matter, they send only one ship and one crew to "find out what happened"?

They don't have any probes orbiting and observing Mars?

They never bothered to check Mars with earthbound telescopes to detect the high concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere?

Why does AMEE insist on "guerrilla tactics" to kill the crew? Seems to me it should be a simple matter to just kill them outright.

I'll admit it's a slick looking film and the special effects are generally very good. I'm just disappointed with the juvenile writing on display in this, and many other big budget space films. I'm a firm believer that a movie can be intelligent while still being accessible to mass audiences.

reply

Why on Earth send a robot with a military kill mode anyway? It's completely insane to send a robot that will turn and kill it's owners if they try to turn it off. Why would the military want such a robot?

reply

Why does the current military use drones to attack when they can be reprogrammed?

Come visit my theblackrosecastle.com

reply

A little off topic but did you hear the the Russians took control of one of our drones and landed it safely? That was around just s few months ago.

If true that would concern me even more than "The most poorly organized trip to Mars in movie history"

reply

Scary, but reprogramming robots is less scary than reprogramming people.

reply

I will not, by action or inaction, allow a human to come to harm.

This should be programmed into ANY robot, but particularly one sent on a peaceful exploration mission. As other posters have said, why the heck would AMEE have a "combat" mode at all?!

Solar flare check, earth closer to sun, it should have been predicted.
Airbags should have worked as intended but malfunctions due to solar flare impact on ships mechanics (manual control etc) could be considered an unforeseen difficulty.
Yup, the whole AMEE thing was rediculous from start, but hey, they need a deus ex machina and they gave one right from start of movie, after all, its a movie.
The stuff sent up in advance got chewed up by the bugs that, quote "they eat EVERYTHING"

just making sure were on the same page here, only one of your gripes is actually valid if negating the fact that its movie and one is used to help it move along. In that, actually none are valid, because, its a movie :D
