Book ending vs. movie

In the book frannie is murdered at the end, but in the film she survives and stays with malloy

I can tell you that the book is way more hardcore than the movie. The book basically gets overtly graphic in its sex scenes to the point of me being surprised any major studio would put up money to fund it. But I suppose them toning the sex down considerably, having famous actors, an acclaimed director, and changing the ending to a happy one helped.
