I seem to remember that not so long ago Meg Ryan was a big name in films. Top Gun, Inner Space, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle. And then it suddenly seemed to come to an end. Admittedly she was perhaps already on the way down, but it's hard to think of another star or even semi-star who's career has nose-dived in quite the same way.

I was wondering the same thing. I re-watched In The Cut this morning since seeing it in the theater. I believe this was the last movie before her major surgeries? I have to say whoever did her work did a horrible job. Her "new" face is very distracting. In her defense, she may have personal reasons for not wanting to play mother roles. Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn't give a crap about aging women, but aging, pot-bellied loonies like Jack Nicolson puff on.
Ugh. I don't know, Meg is a talented actress. Maybe, life in a little pink house is enough for her these days?

The ironic thing is Meg always looked younger than she was. It was a shame what she had done to her face.
People forget that ryan was always a 1 trick pony-rom coms, outside of these most of her work was forgettable and went unnoticed. Her career fall was inevitable as she got older as the whole American golden girl looking for love was'nt gonna sell so well after she turned 40. Comparing her to Bullock or Roberts is silly considering they were never typecast to 1 genre and worked in different types of films from the start.

I had no reason ever to watch another MR-delivery product again, as all her roles had been heretofore amply over-reproduced. A film student friend convinced me to watch In The Cut and to my shock, I confessed "who knew Meg Ryan could act?" Was versed involved (it was a wicked sedated look, anyway)? I prefer to think she'd just been sandbagging all this time.

shareDid this film destroy Meg Ryan's career? I like threads like these... imo, quite possibly yes. But she should still be proud of it, at least she can bow out knowing that she got the chance to prove she can act. She broke typecasting and got kicked out of the rom-com club. Good, it says more about critics and rom-com fans then it does about her. A bit like Jim Caviezel after Passion of the Christ. The only thing better than her acting in this was when she held her own against Parkinson when he tried to rip her to pieces for it.

I agree with other posters that it was the appalling surgery she had just subsequent to this that effectively ended her high profile in films. The fallout in the Press, and of course her appearance, would have been a huge distraction in future productions - so she was far less likely to be cast.
She was beautiful in this film. Mark Ruffalo did full frontal in the film...no one said it ruined his career.

I think the affair with Russell Crowe while making Proof of Life was a big blow to her career. It shouldn’t have been, but it was because she was pegged as America’s sweetheart for a time. Also, Dennis Quaid played up the devastated spouse angle and he revived his career.
The bad plastic surgery and aging out of romcoms sealed the deal.
