The Owl Picture?

Does anyone else remember that owl picture that always hung up on the wall, behind the counter? Cause I remember that Mr. Dressup used to talk to it, and it would like talk, and it's eyes moved. Scared the crap out of me. But I only remember it happening once or twice, and then the owl never spoke again. Anyone else remember this?

reply

I do. I loved that owl picture. But I also remember a little scared of it, as a child.

reply

I thought it was awesome... except owls should only be awake at night! Mr. Dressup shouldn't disturb his sleep.

reply

I remember it, but it didn't scare me. I loved it, and wanted to see more of it, but he never or rarely (I forget) used it again. I remember on a CBC special (it was I think before he died) they showed a clip of Mr. Dressup doing a university show and one of the audience in the Q&A portion said he was scared by the Owl too. Mr. Dressup didn't seem to know how to react to that! So you're not the only one, unless that was you...

reply

To wit, to woo! Hey, kid! I'm talkin' to you! I loved the wise old owl. Coombs voiced it himself so how scary could it be? It wasn't at all to me, anyway.

It was a bit creepy, but I always wished that it would talk more often. I only recall seeing it a few times.

I always thought the Owl was one of the many cool things about the series. But while I don't think the idea of the OWL talking was ever abandoned, it was a feature that was used only on the odd episode. The same with seeing the upstairs of the house in Butternut Square (i.e. Mr. Dressup's bedroom). This too, was only shown the odd time. But perhaps that just adds to the allure of these scenes.

I remember the owl being my favorite character as a young young young child, and then as I grew up it stopped talking... and I started to think I had just dreamt it talking or something....

Movies on IMDB are not overrated, you're just of the minority that doesn't bloody LIKE THEM!

reply

I agree. I was sure I remembered the owl talking... but then when I started to watch old episodes with my kids, I thought that maybe I had just imagined it.

I distintly remember the owl picture which spoke only a couple times most of the
time the owl was asleep. If it was awake it was because it had a message.

I don't remember the owl talking, but I do remember I loved it! At the time my mom had a ceramic owl decoration that reminded me of it :)

I remember this so vividly! It was honestly my favourite part. So much so, that I now have a tattoo of the Wise Old Owl on my leg. I was a little disappointed however, that the owl was not mentioned in the Mr.Dressup documentary (2023). It's now April 2024, and I'm still so fond of my memories of Mr.Dressup that it was tonight I realized that he played an enormous role in the way I view the world and children in it, why I promised myself I'd always remember what it was like to be a child, and is now quite evident he was a solid foundation for why I became an early childhood educator as an adult. The owl though, hands down used to get me sooo excited when his eyes would open and start to move, you always knew he was about to talk then!

That's a cool tattoo to have.
