jumped the shark?

is it just me or has this show jumped the shark? (that means fallen in quality).the episode "future tech" was both out of place and stupid. if thats what the future's like, im worried.this show hasn't been good for years.

I'm sad to admit that I agree. Not only this show, but I think the entire History Channel has jumped the shark. I used to wonder how anyone could watch Discovery (Which used to be just chasing animals around) or TLC (which was already becoming the nothing-but-trading-spaces channel) instead of the history channel. But somewhere along the line, I noticed Modern Marvels went from things like "The Golden Gate Bridge" to things like "Brick" and "Glue." I always joke around with my friends about Modern Marvels "Dirt" which I'm sure isn't far off. I can just picture it, "The Romans perfected the use of dirt in 2000 B.C. blah blah blah. The advancement of dirt technology slowed during the middle ages in Europe blah blah blah. American Pueblo Indians used dirt for their blah blah blah. But it wasn't until the industrial revolution that dirt really blah blah blah. Here in the 21st century, dirt is entering an new era of blah blah blah." Roll credits. And I'm only a history minor. . .

I haven't found a Modern Marvels episode I didn't like. The ones on little things like glue and coins are just as interesting as the bigger projects they cover.

Tubbstoker, your dirt episode synopsis is spot on. I still love Modern Marvels, but you nailed the formula.

Not for nothing, though, dirt IS entering a new era of blah, blah, blah.

i TOTALLY agree with you. its veterans day and instead of showing anything about ANY war they are showing environmental tech. what the hell? Is the hc running out of history to show. personally, i dont want to listen to the history of copper, i would rather watch reruns of america's next top model than the history of dirt.
i used to think of the history channel as the wwii channel, but now i am thinking it is the worthless building material channel. at least wwii is interesting. if the hc has run out of stuff to talk about, there are hundreds of other countries that have thousands of years of history. (and in light of the teen miss usa map comment, i would say a show about world history would be beneficial)

They just had an episode on Dirt last week. I still like this show but I think they're running out of topics. Sad too, since the History Channel might as well change it's name to "The stupid A**ed contrived reality Show Channel".

History channel has to be somewhere under "total abandonment" or "starting to slip"

reply

Agreed about network decay. As interesting as Ice Road Truckers is, I doubt we could quantify the historical impact (unless we're on course for an ice age). Modern Marvels does have some interesting stuff, but they should have changed the title a long time ago. If it was made before written history (water, air, dirt), it can hardly be called a modern marvel. But that's the network brass sticking with a tried-and-true brand. It's like handing someone a glass of milk and calling it Kool-Aid: if the consumers still drink it, they'll call it Kool-Aid!

Seems like somewhere along the way Logic also jumped the shark!
