I recall it was John Lennon who said the Beatles were "Bigger than Jesus" he wasn't exactly bragging, but said it because he was disturbed at how wildly popular the Beatles had become.

Also, despite Lennon's widely known secular views, I've read a number of claims that he had secretly become a born-again Christian in the months before he died. Nobody can know for sure unless he told some people who are still alive.
