Dated and depressing

It may have been groundbreaking for it's time but still depressing to watch.
It's being shown on TCM right now and most of the people they are interviewing are stereotypical gay subtypes ... feminine men , short haired homely women - they dont interview any masculine blue collared attractive men or pretty women. The blonde that smokes like it's going out of style really made me wanna turn it off too.

Stereotypes become stereotypes because they're true. It's only bad when they're all you see. When this movie was made, none of the stereotypes was public enough to be a stereotype to middle America. We were all strange and unknown back then. If you judge this film by current standards you do it and us a disservice.

Besides, it's only your opinion that there aren't any attractive people in this; I disagree completely.

Warranted yes it was a different time period but still they only interviewed what culture would deem a stereotype and how could you say that in 1977 there were no stereotypes to middle america of gay people -just watch any sitcom from that time period and there are many references to gay people as the limp wristed nelly type gay man or butch woman - sanford and son , all in the family just to name 2. They didn't interview anyone outside of this.I mean the people they interviewed were either effeminant men or butch women.

What about the masculine gay man or feminine lesbian woman.
As far as people not being attractive. it's more about their mannerisms then looks.Just because your gay doesn't mean you have to be placed into a stereotype which is all this movie depicts. I know plenty of older men who would have done this movie that weren't your stereotypical gay person , far from it. I also disagree with the strange and unknown comment - gay people were out there ,not as visible as today but we weren't total unknowns just that people were ignorant to the fact that we could love , be loved and have a life.

Sorry, if you really believe everyone in the film fits the negative stereotype, I can't talk to you about this anymore. Your idea of gender appropriateness is just too narrow.
