Why didn't anyone have Willy Jack arrested for statutory rape??

Aside from him being in a car, with a runaway 14 year old, which I know he didn't know about, he got a teenager pregnant. Novalee was only 17 when she had Americus, meaning she could have been 16 when she became pregnant with Americus. Willy Jack looked like he was in his 20's.

her parents would have had to files charges against him, which they wouldn't have done as it was clear her mom didn't give a sh*t about her.

16 is the age of consent in some states.

In a statutory rape case in Tennessee, the age of consent is 18. There is a close in age exemption of 4 years which applies to those between the ages of 13 and 18. The stance of the state of Tennessee on the age of consent is "Statutory rape is sexual penetration of a victim by the defendant or of the defendant by the victim when the victim is at least thirteen (13) but less than eighteen (18) years of age and the defendant is at least four (4) years older than the victim." Someone who is 13 cannot legally consent to sex with anyone older than 17 according to state law. If the defendant is under the age of 18, anyone who is more than 4 years older than the defendant can be charged with statutory rape.

I know this is an old topic but in the book they were a lot closer in age. She was seventeen and he was eighteen.

At least he was arrested for being with the 14 yr old although they never actually did anything. He gave her a ride and the most they did was he put his arm around her and she snuggled up to him and I think she might have kissed him on the neck. I get he had intention of doing more with her (the 14 yr old) but he hadn't up to the point they were pulled over.
