I love Sally Field but her character was so mean. It's sad how there are really parents in the world who would take money from their daughter that they hadn't seen in years right after she has a baby and no place to go! How could someone do that let alone to your own child? Like I said, Sally's a great actress though. Total opposite of her mother role in Forrest Gump! Lol

Novalee's family and boyfriend were white trash, plain and simple! She was lucky she had the people she did come into her life. Too bad Novalee was that naive.

What makes me sad is, I really think she had every intention of helping Novalee. I get the impression that she did come to help but got tempted by the cash and ran off again.

Nah, she didn't show up cause she wanted to help. She showed up cause her daughter was getting alot of attention and she wanted some too.

I think it's the combination of wanting to bask in the 15 minutes of limelight and feeling guilty for abandoning her daughter. The money brought her to her selfish senses and she bolted.
