No Good

I'm sorry, but this was a horrible film. I LOVE "Lost in Translation" and I thought that "The Virgin Suicides" was OK, but this was just bad. I have nothing against Sofia but the movie was full of cliches and the acting was just awful. The only thing it had going for it was Lance Accord's beautiful black and white cinematography. However, Sofia has become a wonderful writer/director sice "Lick the Star" so I guess she had to figure out her style before she could be brilliant.

This film is at least 10 times better than Lost in Translation.

Which is simply the most overrated movie of the last 5 years.

LICK THE STAR-I thought the shots were nicely shaped, the story began compellingly but didn't pay off for me. I don't understand how anyone could call LOST IN TRANSLATION overrated. I thought it had a lot of heart and subtle tenderness. Subtle is the key word, I think. Most features released today seem to feel they have to pour the paint over your head for you to get it. I think the movie is absolutely gorgeous and the ultimate message, about things changing in a second, is very true. It's just what comes in between that makes no sense. It starts out with a girl who's jealous of the school's queen. Then, we find out they're best friends. THEN, we find out the girls want to poison the boys with arsenic. ( ? ) And then there's a game of telephone, words get switched around the kids think she's racist and everyone suddenly knows about Lick the Star. Although It was gorgeous, I don't think just that could save this film.

how the hell can anyone say that was better than lost in translation. im sorry but thats ridiculous.

Lick the Star was a wonderful short and for someone to say it wasn't doesn't understand how true the movie is to life. I work in a high school and I know how things can change between girls in a matter of days. The acting was great too. I enjoyed the short greatly.

Christ, you cannont compare this film to one like "lost in translation" im sorry, but what the hell is wrong with you? How could you take her first film and compare obviously what knowlege she had then, compared to what knowlege about story and film making and story she house now and possibly expcect a 14 minute short film! To size up to a movie like that. I will admit, it has its plot holes, but for a short film i think its very enjoyable. You have to look at it as a short film and not as a short film made by Sophia Coppala the chick who did 'lost in translation' if you can look at like that and still say you hate it, then its different.

You know the expression, to each his own ... but this film is the furthest thing from "no good."

It's beautifully crafted, cleverly twisted, and the acting is damn good, especially the girl that plays Chloe, Audrey Heaven. From the opening credits, where she grabs you by the eyeballs, to the closing credits, where she tears your heart out, this gorgeous kid can act. Sofia knows how to write, direct and cast.

Though Lick the Star is only like 18 minutes, it's a film classic.

I really wanted to like "Lick the Star" but I found that it kind of fell flat. the cinematography, acting and story were all interesting but I found that there was way, way too much exposition. The film left me feeling kind of empty as we had about 10 minutes of introduction and then the girls fall into unpopularity was abruptly showen in about 2 minutes. It was still a wonderful effort from Sofia Coppola that showed a lot of promise.

i haven't seen the movie yet, but isn't that a matter of opinion and since it's about a bunch of girls, how would you know if it's realistic or not, "johnny the leprachaun"?

the story looked cool, and the plot seemed nice too. but i thought kate was the main character. then all of a sudden, chloe takes ther spotlight, and the story is about her. ten the movie ends and you see katew again. what the heck was that all about? the acting wasnt the best though. it was empty. you know like when someone is acting and you can see that. they weren't real actors. real actors perform, not act. they really feel the way you see them feeling.

reply

well the acting was bad, and you could tell some of the girls were making up their lines as they went because they forgot them or something. but the bad acting didnt neccessarily make the movie bad. I liked it, although it started out pretty strong and went in a weird direction...not sure if I liked the ending.

Haven't seen. Wouldn't bother if I did get the chance. Actors must have been awful - look at what wonderful careers they all went on to.

This is actually my favorite thing that Sofia has done. I didn't really like virgin suicides all that much. But i did see it years ago, I might have to rewatch it again. Or maybe check out Lost in Translation, I've been avoiding it for a while.
