I love both versions...
Really, they're both quite good and Godzilla's rampage was left un touched. Plus, I thought Raymond Burr did a good job.

Also a fan of both versions.
shareCall me a stick in the mud but I don't like the American version and think the original Japanese version is vastly superior. This is mainly because the themes that made this a strong film in its original Japanese form were downplayed or elimiated entirely in the American version, causing it to come off as nothing more that just another monster movie and ultimately doing the film and its creators a disservice. The American version is definately the weaker of the two.
shareI have seen the American version 3 or 4 times, but I still have yet to see the Japanese version. Everyone seems to love it so it sounds like I really need to see it eventually. I know the American version is great so if the general consensus is the Japanese version is better than it must be really amazing.
Death lives in the Vault of Horror!
The US version is one of my favorite GODZILLA movies. I haven't seen the original Japanese version. I did catch the ending on TV once, though.

Same here. The American version is a tad less dark and poignant than the Japanese original, but still a solid and enjoyable picture in its own right.
I am the Duke of IMDb bio writers! I am A#1!
Agreed. The American version is not the "Abortion" purists want to make it out to be. It had to be done in this way (or a similar way including splicing in an American hero) to sell it to the 1950's US audiences. I think that it is still a fantastic monster movie that retains a good amount of the gravitas from the Japanese original/
With that said, I still like the Japanese version a little better only because it is the "real story" complete with background themes of politics, the War, nuclear testing and the role of women in the "new" Japan. However, the editing of the second Godzilla attack in the American version is a little better and has less gaps than the Japanese version where there are some silent, "dead" spots with no music an no action..just good ole Gojira thinking about what to do next. :)
Two great movies imho. :)
