When I watched this I just kept thinking, jeeze this Mother is so Awful!

I know that dad was an evil bastard for what he did. But the mother basically put her in that position.

She leaves her daughter with a guy thats an angry broken drunkard, just to go fool around with her new boy-toy... How selfish.

Then at the end, we find out she has never visited her daughter in prison, yet goes and moves to be near her boy-toy in his prison to stay in contact. What a cow!!!

I was actually hoping she would be convicted of the murder, cos she basically deserved it, she obviously made the situation in the home unbearable, and made things worse with the way she acted.

Anyone else feel that way?

I tooloathed the Mother she was unbearable. Leaving her daughter all alone with a guy like that... Plus she was super ugly. It's a pity that she wasn't convicted of the murder in the end...

Yeah I couldn't believe that dam mother to leave her daughter like that with that man so she could go off and be happy and play with her new boy toy. Your not a mother part of the time or when u feel like it when ur a mother ur a mother 24-7 everyday. As far as I'm concerned she should have been guilty of that and went to prison she's the one that put her daughter in that condition.

It's easy to blame the mom but she did not know he would do that. As far as her boy toy she was entitled just like any one else to have some fun. The hard part was she seemed to not become caring while the gal was truly in need afterwards. Remember the mom in American Beauty did not care for the daughter either and I would bet after the death of the dad she did little to help her daughter also.

completely agree and htis gave the movie some depth- if the mom was loving and didn't do anytihng wrong, then there would be o shades of grey here. Ironside's character was more pathetic than evil before she left...
