in the latter half it is virtually the same as Saruman's in Lord of the Rings....which came first? Was he simply doing both at the same time?

Actually he did this first, then practically hopped on the plane to New Zealand.

Gormenghast came first and Lee was cast because apparently he once knew the writer of the books.
