Unwatchable

I have enjoyed every BBC "Period Drama", even the more average productions like Lorna Doone. I also enjoy Gothic works and have quite a lot of Hammer Horrors.

This was unwatchable rubbish. The cast is excellent but it's so poorly produced and so cheap looking, and the hammy way the direction was given makes this just shocking. Can't understand how this has such a high rating. Apparently the critics agree with me. Just my opinion, if you enjoyed it then it achieved something!

Disagree.

The production values were very good. They essentially built a whole culture.

Can't stop the signal.

The look was intentional. Much of the clothing was meant to look overly worn because 'new', in Gormenghast, would be considered somewhat obscene as its world is slavishly devoted to ritual. Gormenghast doesn't even have a period to emulate because all of its past has been ossified into a ritualistic present that neither knows, nor really (for the most part) even cares about the past except for in the way it shapes every second of every day in the present. And this is what Titus comes to loath.
