Well, I and the rest of my class were confused as to who Jerry is. We all thought it was her brother...

Jerry is Sarah's brother. Like Rachel and Carla, Jerry is gay. Jerry came to the dinner with Sarah, her husband Art and their infant twin daughters. And Art (Sarah's husband and Jerry's brother-in-law) is Rachel's older brother.
Hopefully that helps you guys out.
Actually, you just confused me more. I just plain didn't get why Jerry was at the dinner to begin with.

Well, the family invites the uncle and aunt (the father's sister and husband) and their children, Rachel with her girlfriend Carla and Art with his wife Sarah and their kids. I guess, they wanted to invite Sarah's lonely single brother since he doesn't have any other family around. Anyway, he's Rachel's brothers brother-in-law, so not directly related. Only, the parents don't know that he's the father of Rachel's baby (since they don't even know about the baby). I guess Art and Sarah know, though, which might have been another reason they wanted him invited and being closer to the family.
