Only 1/16th?

I've always loved watching this movie with my nephews, but this one line always irritated me. How can you be 1/16th of a Wiccan? That's like saying you're only 1/16th of a Catholic or 1/16th of a Muslim or something.

Anyone else noticed that line & got a little irritated at it? I'm guessing that the writers did it in order to keep some parents from going "OMG- you said witchcraft! EEEEEVVVVIIIIIILLLL!", but it is still irritating.

Oh this irritated me too, especially since I'm a Wiccan myself. It also irritated me when Ben said "She was not a Wiccan. She was indeed a witch." Practitioners of Wicca are actually called Witches, male or female, but I suppose because they were trying to diffrenciate between them they left this out, plus Witch for us is capitalized as a title, like Catholic or Muslim. It still annoyed me though, but for the most part I love this movie, it's one of the few that exist that depicts Wicca in a good way and the story itself is really good. Plus I love the Hex Girls

I assume they were thinking of how people can be 1/16 Jewish, since "Jewish" refers to both the religious and ethnic groups. However they really screwed up since, you can't be 1/16 Wiccan because a) "Wicca" only refers to the religion so you either are or are not one, and b) even if you could be, it would mean that you had a Wiccan great-great grandparent. Since Wicca only started in the 1950's, that's only possible if your family starts having children at around age 10.

But, as stupid as that line was, I didn't really care. I mean, criticizing movies more misrepresenting even the most basic aspects of a religion, culture, occupation, nationality, or anything else for that matter, is like criticizing the ocean for being wet.

ya ya I won't say it's the worst example I've ever seen (low bar right) but I did rather pull down my enjoyment of an other wise pretty darn entertaining movie. it's basically a big wad of PC+"Hollywood"knologe all rolled up....the out come is worse than the sume of it's parts.

ya know thinking about if they wanted to have a PC "good which" thing thy could have just as easily HAD one or more of the hex girls be an actual Wiccan instead of conflating (and back projecting) the two concept's.

hmm i'm actually pretty sure they (at lest partly) did it to keep some parent's form going "OMG you said witch's were EVIL instead of poor oppressed religious/feminist minority's"
