disturbing and sad

I just watched this on Hulu and it made me feel sad for the girls, and angry too. The willful neglect of the twins by all three adults, and their obliviousness/denial that they had done anything wrong, awful. No assessment of the girls abilities, just refusing to let them go to school?? Not talking to them, not teaching them any language? WTF? They just refused to parent them. Then at the end when it is clear that these adults who ignored the girls and their needs are hoping to cash in (buying new house, Cadillac).

I think both parents and the grandmother had mental issues, they all seemed slow. It was hard to watch the incompetent and clueless father unable to support his family, complaining about having to pay for extra days in the hospital following the twins' birth, years(!) after the fact. And the mother's racism, bad wigs, broken English and complaining about her living situation but not doing anything to change it!! Harder to tell what the deal was with the Grandmother as she refused to speak English but something was very very wrong with the three of them and the girls suffered the most from it.

Was the mother working at all? Where was she during the day when the grandmother was with the girls? If she was working she must have been (should have been!) contributing some $$ to the household. If she wasn't working why wasn't she home?

Those girls were made disabled by the neglect, they weren't born disabled and the seizures they suffered as babies didn't make them disabled. The twins should have been taken from that home as no one was caring for them financially or developmentally. Tragic.

I wonder how the girls are doing now.
