Not expecting anyone to read this but...

I just watched Hayao Miyazaki's masterful Castle in the Sky and I couldn't help but notice some parallels to this.

I love this anime. I rented the title from Blockbuster about 4 or five times until they sold off all of their vhs tapes and I was lucky enough to purchase them.

BUT Castle in the Sky features a girl w/ a powerful crystal accompanied by a ragish boy, a group of space pirates lead by a woman, military ships on hot pursuit and an overall costume and setting design that recalled this. But Castle came out in 1986.

I was hoping I wasn't the only person in the world who likes Legend of the Crystals, but if anyone reads this, I would like to know if you noticed the inspiration a little.

"But, Captain, wouldn't it be more humane-like to slit his throat?"

Now that you mention it !

"I will perfect my own race of people. A race of atomic supermen which will conquer the world!"

Safe to say Miyazaki was a huge influence on Japanese video game developers, particularly from the mid 80s to the mid 90s and especially Square. e.g. Chocobos were lifted directly from Nausicaa, in which they rode around on big birds called Horseclaws. Chocobos look almost exactly like them, only major difference being that they're yellow rather than black. In English localizations, Chocobos have various calls from game to game like "kweh" or "wark." But in the original Japanese versions they always say the same thing: "kui" (pronounced kwee, which of course got corrupted in English as kweh.) The very first Horseclaws introduced in Nausicaa were a pair named Kai and Kui.

I don't really remember anything about the FF anime other than that I thought it was a piece of crap. What I do remember is that when I finally saw Castle in the Sky about 15 years ago, it reminded me of Chrono Trigger. Nothing specific, just the general tone and feel I guess.
