I don't understand why there are so many negative threads on this forum, sure Small TIme Crooks wasn't Woody's best, but his worst? I don't think so. I mean, surely it was better than the Curse of the Jade Scorpion (which I liked nevertheless). I understand Small TIme Crooks was uneven and the fact that Woody forgot some great characters halfway in the way is a mistake.
But it was just very refreshing to see Woody play a very different character, a fundamentally clumsy and stupid character. And I personally found this film very very funny. Woody's funniest "recent" film IMO. An underrated film.

Herein lies the problem. It's uneven, forgets characters, slowly paced, and lacks the punch that other Woody Allen movies have.

I totally disagree. I think this may be one of his most underrated movie.

i think its a great Woody outing, sure not one of his best and its a bit shallow, but i dont think Allen minds that at all, its great entertainment to watch Woody act in this film, he plays a great scumnall, i think its on a par with The Curse of the Jade Scorpion

Last Film I Watched:
Mr. Arkadin: The Corinth Version - Orson Welles(7/10)

reply

I agree! This movie is marvelous. The more I watch it, the better I like it.

Well, certainly seems to be his most trivial ever. I was able to find some undercurrent in Curse and Anything Else. Even Hollywood has a good idea in a hysterically blind director.

But I would be most interested in anyone's comments of how this had depth to it of any kind.

reply

I just watched this and I agree. Easily the worst film of his I've seen, and I've seen that Jade Scorpion one (which I actually thought was alright)

Still a legend

reply

Nah, Hollywood Ending and Anything Else were worse than this. I haven't seen Melinda & Melinda though.

reply

I remember Small time crooks actually being quite good, although I did see it a long time ago. Melinda and Melinda on the other hand was really weak, the acting was really just horrible.

reply

I'd say "Anything Else" is my least favorite Woody – but even at his worst, he's worthwhile. I'd rank "Small Time Crooks" among his midlevel films like "Manhattan Murder Mystery" and "Broadway Danny Rose."

The step scene at Che Che Potters house pretty much summed of Woody's lack of humor these days..Time for Woody to stop acting...he is an embarrassment ...The movie was saved by the other actors...all of them...

There`s nothing really wrong with Crooks - as a matter of fact, it`s a sympathetically unpretentious comedy, made all the more appealing by the fact that for once, Mr Stiffy has left the rarified air of the rich, bitchy-moany intellectual elite and instead upholds the more simple and immediate values/approach to life. Perhaps that`s why Stiffy`s own chatacter does not, for once, come across as annoying or tiresome. And although the moments of comedic brilliance are rare, there really are no outright awful jokes, either. A perfectly entertaining effort that should fit somewhere in the middle of Stiffy`s filmography.
