The Power Station ARK Bunker and other locations

Does anyone know about the disused power station which was in the series as a bunker?

reply

i'm not sure but the holiday camp is Pontin's holiday camp in Rhyl, North Wales.

The ruins of the old Tower Beach Holiday camp were used - it did belong to Pontins for a while but their main camp in Prestatyn was a different on altogether.

The ruins have now been completely demolished and there is new housing development on the site - 'Tower Gardens'.

Just noticed that the station used for the scene with the dogs chasing the survivors is Manchester Mayfield. This is opposite Manchester Piccadilly station, and belive it or not hasn't been used for passenger rail traffic since 1960, and at all since the late 70s/early 80s

Knowing Rhyl it perhaps always looked like that.

It's Thorpe Marsh about 5 miles north east of Doncaster that was undergoing demolition at the time. The station stopped generating in March 1994 being placed in 'reserve' for a short while. A few years later (I'm unsure of the exact date) demolition started. The three chimneys on site were demolished early morning on Sunday the 14th February 1999, and almost all of the buildings have now gone. The cooling towers remain as of Mid 2007 and can be seen on Google Earth - search for 'Barnby Dun', and the remains are clearly visible.

This link shows a picture of the station prior to demolition.

The distant view of the Ark bunker was from Dish Stone Rocks at the head of Chow Beck, looking NW past Alphin Pike towards Greenfield. The power station was painted into the scene (and the village painted out), but other details all match up.

This is a similar view on Google Earth:
